AMES – Iowa State swimming moved to 2-1 on the season with a 181-107 victory against South Dakota.<\/p>\n
The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) notched a convincing victory over South Dakota (1-3, 0-0 Summit), 181-107. The Cyclones are now 7-0 all-time against the Coyotes.<\/p>\n
Iowa State opened the meet strong with a sweep of the 200 medley relay, led by Bre Loeschke, Kasey Roberts, Amanda Paulson and Laura Miksch, touching in a time of 1:47.28. The Cyclones went on to take first-place in all 14 swimming events on the evening.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey really stayed tough when they were tired at the end of the race,\u201d head coach Duane Sorenson said. \u201cOur 400 freestyle relay teams all swam really fast, which is an indicator of where you are at as far as when you\u2019re tired and if you\u2019re keeping your stroke together, which they all seemed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
A talented freshmen class continued to impress as Mary Kate Luddy, Kasey Roberts and Laura Miksch all tallied event wins for the Cyclones. Luddy posted a season best performance for Iowa State in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.41, and Roberts recorded 29 points for ISU with wins in the 200 medley relay, 100 backstroke and 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wasn\u2019t entirely sure of how I would be scoring for the team, but I was expected to score points, just not quite this well,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p>\n
On the boards, junior team captain Elyse Brouillette took first and second in the one and three-meter events with scores of 285.95 and 283.60, respectively. Brouillette has yet to finish outside of the top-three in three meets so far this season.<\/p>\n
\u201cRight now, early in the season, I would give them an A, but grades can go down and grades can go up,\u201d head diving coach Jeff Warrick said of his squad\u2019s performance on the season. \u201cTo keep that A, they will have to keep improving.\u201d<\/p>\n
School record holder in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle, Karyl Clarete, recorded a season best time for Iowa State in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.91.<\/p>\n
The South Dakota women\u2019s swimming and diving team fell 181-107 to Iowa State in Friday night\u2019s dual at Beyer Hall Pool in Ames, Iowa.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Greysen Hertting continued a string of strong performances in the dives. Hertting won the three-meter dive with 293.65 points and finished runner-up in the one-meter dive with 275.55 points.<\/p>\n
In the pool, sophomore Sam Schutt recorded two individual runner-up finishes and led off a third-place relay team. Schutt finished second in the 200-yard free with a season-best mark of 1:52.44, a time .5 seconds behind Iowa State record holder Karyl Clarete. The sophomore also swam to second place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.31. Her final event of the evening was the 400-yard freestyle relay, where she teamed up with sophomore Allie Pfauth and freshmen Emily Lundstrom and Kellee Lekavy for a third-place finish in 3 minutes, 32.4 seconds.<\/p>\n
Senior Paige Stavely followed Schutt in the 200-yard backstroke to third place with a mark of 2:11.86.<\/p>\n
Rachel and Katie Svendson each recorded runner-up finishes in distance freestyle events. Katie, a freshman, swam a time of 5:18.74 for the 500-yard free. Rachel, a junior, clocked in at 10:58.75 in the 1,000-yard free.<\/p>\n
Freshman Kassidie Cornell placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke. She recorded a time of 2:29.55.<\/p>\n
The South Dakota women travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, tomorrow to dual Northern Iowa at 1 p.m.<\/p>\n
