FAYETTEVILLE – The Missouri women’s swimming and diving team picked up its first SEC victory of the season Friday night, topping Arkansas 166-134 thanks to two individual wins apiece from Danielle Barbiea, Abby Duncan and Hannah Stevens.<\/p>\n
The Mizzou women’s swimming and diving team beat No. 22 Arkansas, 166-134, on Friday to begin the Southeastern Conference season 1-0. The Tigers won 10 of 16 events including both relays en route to the victory.<\/p>\n
Senior Danielle Barbiea, redshirt junior Abby Duncan and freshman Hannah Stevens each won two events individually to lead the team. Joined by sophomore Katharine Ross, the quartet set the tone early for Mizzou, claiming first place in the 200 medley relay behind a 1:41.40 to kick off the meet.<\/p>\n
Stevens kept the momentum going and swam a 55.33 in the 100 back to win her first career event. Through just two career meets, the freshman owns the ninth fastest time in Mizzou history in the 100 back. Stevens continued her dominance in the 200 back, edging out Arkansas’ Anna Mayfield by two tenths of a second with a 1:58.92. That time is also the ninth quickest in school history.<\/p>\n
Duncan recorded her first individual event victory as a Tiger after posting a 1:01.85 in the 100 breast. The junior transfer from Auburn barely out-touched Ross (1:01.96) as the two teammates took first and second, respectively. Duncan now has the fourth-fastest time at Mizzou and Ross still owns the school record after a 59.56 performance last spring. Later in the meet, Duncan squeaked out a win in the 200 breast with a 2:15.38, touching in front of Razorback senior Nikki Daniels by less than a second.<\/p>\n
Barbiea gave the Tigers some breathing room and took first in the 50 free and the 100 fly. The senior clocked a 53.45 to win the 100 fly by more than three seconds. In the 200 IM, Ross also secured a win with a 2:02.59. She now has three event wins through two meets to launch her sophomore campaign.<\/p>\n
In the diving well, junior Lauren Reedy ousted the field in the 1-meter dive, scoring 299.63 points. Trailing in second place, freshman Alexa Beckwith put together the best output of her first collegiate season with 279.75 points.<\/p>\n
Mizzou polished off its successful day on a high note. The Tigers’ A 400 relay squad of freshman Rachel Hayden, Anna Patterson, Stevens and Barbiea won the final event of the meet, clocking a 3:23.16 to top the Razorbacks `A’ team.<\/p>\n
The Tigers will return home next Friday for another dual meet when they take on in-state foe Missouri State. The meet will start at 5 p.m. at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. No. 22 Arkansas women\u2019s swimming and diving fell to the Missouri Tigers, 166-134, Friday afternoon in the Arkansas Natatorium.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a very close meet,\u201d said head coach Sean Schimmel. \u201cOne of our goals coming out of last Saturday was to come in here and be a much better team. I was proud of them because this was more of a reflection of who we are. Unfortunately, we came up just a little bit short.”<\/p>\n
Despite the loss, the Razorbacks (0-3, 0-3 SEC) tallied six first-place finishes on the day, led by sophomore Aiden Lister, who registered two event wins in the 1,000 (10:10.46) and 500 freestyle (4:58.27).<\/p>\n
\u201cAiden has certainly come around the past few weeks and that showed up today,\u201d said Schimmel. \u201cShe had a great 1,000 and then she backed that up with a win in the 500. She had some big swims.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Arkansas freshmen highlighted the Razorbacks\u2019 efforts. Freshman diver Nicole Gillis dove to a first-place finish in the 3-meter boards with a score of 320.70, outscoring the runner-up by 30 points. The Razorback freshmen trio of Taylor Weiss, Jessie Garrison and Caitlin Sheridan went 1-2-3 in the 200 butterfly. Weiss was the event winner with a time of 2:03.40, followed by Garrison (2:04.67) and Sheridan (2:05.01).<\/p>\n
Junior Anna Mayfield took first in the 200 freestyle (1:50.29), while junior Nina Drolc touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle (50.66).<\/p>\n
Arkansas took second in eight events in the loss. Freshman Chelsea Tatlow came away with two second place finishes in the 200 IM (2:03.84) and 100 backstroke (55.72). Swimming the remaining second place finishes were junior Rachel Stoehr (5:01.42 in the 500 freestyle), senior Nikki Daniels (200 breaststroke in 2:15.87) and senior Susanna White (50 freestyle in 23.50).<\/p>\n
Arkansas took second in both the 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays. In the 200 medley, the team of Mayfield, Daniels, White and Drolc swam a time of 1:41.91. In the 400 freestyle relay, Drolc, White, Mayfield and Monroe teamed up for a time of 3:24.57.<\/p>\n
The Razorbacks will hit the road to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Nebraska on Nov. 8 at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n
