INCHEON – Zulfiya Gabidullina, Kazakhstan, set a new world record time of 46.40 to win gold in the women’s 50m freestyle S5 on Wednesday (22 October). Being an S3 swimmer herself, she impressed by holding off her competitors from the higher classes.<\/p>\n
Gabidullina broke Olga Sviderska’s existing world record, which she had set at the 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships in August, by 0.66. Singapore’s Theresa Goh took silver, while Juan Bai from China won bronze in a new Asian record time for the S4 class.<\/p>\n
Gabidullina’s compatriots Anuar Akhmetov and Andrey Afanasyev secured a double podium in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB12. Akhmetov broke his own Asian record from the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal, Canada, to take the gold medal in a time of 01:10.41.<\/p>\n
Four more Asian records were broken in the pool in Incheon.<\/p>\n
China’s Yinan Wang swam to his third gold medal of the Games in a new Asian record time of 01:09.73 in the men’s 100m backstroke S8.<\/p>\n
Wang’s compatriot Lingling Song broke her own Asian record set at the London 2012 Paralympic Games in the women’s 50m freestyle S6.<\/p>\n
S7 swimmer Yajing Huang of China impressed in the women’s 100m backstroke S8 finishing first in a new Asian record time of 01:24.99.<\/p>\n
The final Asian record of the day was set by Indonesia’s Marinus Yowei in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB13 in a time of 01:17.43.<\/p>\n
Japan’s Keiichi Kimura added a third gold medal to his tally, comfortably winning the men’s 100m breaststroke SB11 ahead of Thailand’s Panom Lagsanaprim.<\/p>\n
Kimura’s teammate Daisuke Ejima won his first gold medal of the Games by beating China’s Jingang Wang to top the podium in the men’s 100m backstroke S7. Eijima’s compatriot Jumpei Kimura completed the podium.<\/p>\n
Chinese Paralympic champion and world record holder Tao Zheng dominated in his favourite race, the men’s 100m backstroke S6, to win the gold medal ahead of Iraq’s Jawad Joudah.<\/p>\n
Zheng then went on to win a silver medal in the men’s 50m freestyle S6 behind his compatriot Qing Xu.<\/p>\n
Furong Lin won an impressive fifth gold medal of the Games in the men’s breaststroke SB9 and set a new Games record in a time of 01:08.67 to add another medal to China’s tally.<\/p>\n
Meng Zhang of China added one more gold to her collection of Asian Para Games medals. Her time of 01:20.67 was just outside her own Asian record she set at Montreal 2013 in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB9.<\/p>\n
Indonesia’s Mulyana won gold in the men’s 50m freestyle S4, beating home favourites Kyunghyun Kim and Gi-Seong Jo to silver and bronze respectively.<\/p>\n
Vietnam’s Thanh Tung Vo continued his medal haul on the third day of competition and added a gold medal in the men’s 50m freestyle S5 to his total.<\/p>\n
Inkook Lee won the only gold medal for South Korea of the day by beating Wai Lok Tang of Hong Kong, China, in the men’s 100m backstroke S14.<\/p>\n
The day was completed by two relays.<\/p>\n
China took gold in the men’s 4x100m freestyle 34 points, while Kazakhstan won the men’s 4x100m medley 49 points relay.<\/p>\n
The 2014 Asian Para Games opened on Saturday 18 October and will run through to Friday 24 October.<\/p>\n
Athletes from 41 countries will compete in 23 sports.<\/p>\n
