Selthoffer,\u00a0Chief European Columnist<\/em><\/p>\n<p>LAUSANNE &#8211; The ground swell of negative reactions and anger continues to grow and reverberate globally against FINA and Dr. Julio C. Maglione, URU, for the unpopular decision of awarding FINA\u2019s highest honor, the <a title=\"FINA Awards Russian President Vladimir Putin With Controversial FINA Order\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-awards-russian-president-vladimir-putin-controversial-fina-order\/\" target=\"_blank\">FINA Order last week to President Vladimir Putin<\/a>, RUS for agreeing to host the FINA World Championships and Masters Championships in Kazan next year.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s simple. The virulent reaction against Putin can be broken down into two groups. Those from countries who have been invaded by Putin and have had citizens that have been killed or those who have not.<\/p>\n<p>How smart of a PR gesture was it by Maglione and FINA? <a title=\"FINA Is Out of Order With Vladimir Putin Award\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-is-out-of-order-with-vladimir-putin-award\/\" target=\"_blank\">The negative fallout has people calling for resignations<\/a> or <a title=\"American Swimming Coaches Association Calls For A \u201cREFUSAL TO ACCEPT OR RECOGNIZE\u201d FINA Order Award for Vladimir Putin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/american-swimming-coaches-association-calls-refusal-accept-recognize-fina-order-award-vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_blank\">demanding individuals held responsible to be fired<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>German newspaper <em>Die Zeit<\/em>, quoted deputies of the German Bundestag Sports Committee as saying awarding Putin the FINA Order was \u201can insensitive provocation and open mockery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conducting an unofficial survey across the social media and Twitter universe of FINA\u2019s 209 national federations, members, coaches and athletes, we found not one tweet of support in favor for the award to Putin. Zero. Not one.<\/p>\n<p>Oops. Correction. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.itar-tass.com\/sports\/753929\" target=\"_blank\">The Russian media group TASS did<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Putin Depicted in Heroic Art Themes<\/h2>\n<p>To boost Putin\u2019s image to counter growing global anger, the Moscow Art Museum has put on a new art exhibition. It depicts Vladimir Putin as Hercules, Atlas and other god-like \u201cheroic\u201d figures.<\/p>\n<p>Christiane Amanpour, CNN, <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/video\/data\/2.0\/video\/world\/2014\/10\/07\/pkg-amanpour-russia-president-vladimir-putin-iaw.cnn.html?hpt=hp_bn5\" target=\"_blank\">did a story on the art exhibition in Moscow<\/a>. However, you have to consider, after spending millions and millions of Euros to host the FINA events, Putin may prefer something more in line with other corporate sport sponsorships and protocol to demonstrate FINA\u2019s gratitude like\u2026 rebranding the events.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps calling them the \u201cPutin Championships\u201d held at the \u201cPutin Pool.\u201d It\u2019s the least FINA could do besides awarding him another \u20ac55 plastic engraved plaque at the end of the championships. Right? Sure it is.<\/p>\n<h2>FINA Transparency? Accountability?<\/h2>\n<p>The awarding of the FINA Order to Putin has caused a growing demand to examine whose idea it was and the whole process of how the award was given. Some sources say it was an effort by Tam\u00e1s Gyarfas, HUN, but that cannot be confirmed. We attempted to reach him for a statement, but, he did not respond.<\/p>\n<p>Then, we telephoned FINA in Lausanne to find out who was responsible: <em>Ring, ring, ring\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>FINA staffer:<\/strong> \u201cHello, FINA.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>SW:<\/strong> \u201cHello. This is Steve Selthoffer from Swimming World.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>FINA staffer:<\/strong> (Pause) \u201cWhat is that?\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>SW:<\/strong> \u201c<em>Swimming World Magazine<\/em>.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>FINA staffer:<\/strong> \u201cIs it a magazine?\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>SW:<\/strong> \u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>FINA staffer:<\/strong> \u201cOh. One minute please\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We were then instructed to send our questions by email to FINA asking who was responsible for the idea and how the award process was conducted.<\/p>\n<h2>Europe Reactions<\/h2>\n<p>Today, due to the growing crisis in Ukraine and the MH-17 air disaster killing 298 innocent civilians on board by a Russian BUK missile battery inside Ukraine, <em>Bloomberg News<\/em> reported Finnish Prime Minister Stubb firmly announcing that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-10-14\/putin-intimidation-tactics-kill-entente-hope-for-finnish-premier.html?hootPostID=1de1ea8d9aa740543e662c57f5d6bd1c\" target=\"_blank\">the gloves must come off in Europe\u2019s handling of Putin<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many feel the same holds true for the FINA leadership. They\u2019re tired of it. Enraged again, animosities are running high.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/federal-politics\/political-news\/tony-abbott-vows-to-shirtfront-vladimir-putin-over-mh17-tragedy-20141013-115cm3.html\" target=\"_blank\"> threatened that he would \u201cshirtfront\u201d Mr. Putin in their upcoming G20 meeting<\/a>. Shirtfronting is a tough rugby term meant to aggressively grab an opponent\u2019s jersey to confront another person closely, face-to-face or chest-banging them in no uncertain terms. It\u2019s an act of brute force.<\/p>\n<p>And recently, Chancellor Angela Merkel, GER being raised in East Germany under Russia\u2019s control, made her points thoroughly clear in her conversations with Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Those are serious warnings to Putin coming from different heads of state.<\/p>\n<p>And, after the Sochi Olympics with the invasion of Ukraine and the downing of MH-17, a digital scrubbing has been taking place across the Facebook world with athletes and sport executives quietly deleting their selfies with President Putin from their Olympic photo albums.<\/p>\n<h2>FINA Dodging Questions<\/h2>\n<p>FINA won\u2019t name their mastermind for this award. Today, we received FINA\u2019s response to our email asking for who was responsible for the idea of giving the award to Putin and how the process occurred.<\/p>\n<p>The reply was, \u201cFINA won\u2019t make any comment on this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That must be tough for Pedro Adrega, Head of FINA Communications Department, to put out. He\u2019s a good guy.<\/p>\n<p>While Maglione and FINA are rewarding Putin, FIFA is weighing its options. If more evidence emerges, of Putin downing MH-17, then there should be no football World Cup in Russia in 2018.<\/p>\n<h2>FINA? Honor? Awards?<\/h2>\n<p>To give a perfect example of negative and polarizing effects of the current FINA leadership conduct in Lausanne\u2026 On Monday, October 20, the legendary coach <a title=\"Peter Daland, USC Legend and Co-Founder of Swimming World Magazine, Passes Away\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/peter-daland-usc-legend-and-co-founder-of-swimming-world-magazine-passes-away\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Daland of USC passed away at the age of 93<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Daland was revered as a global icon and held up as \u201c<a title=\"Peter Daland \u2013 A Coach to Model a Life After\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/peter-daland-passes-coach-model-life\/\" target=\"_blank\">one to model your life after<\/a>.\u201d Without question, Daland was a great and admired figure in international sports for more than\u00a040 years. He was a U.S. Olympic coach twice in 1964 and 1972, he led USC to nine NCAA titles, 17 National AAU Championships, helped co-found <em>Swimming World<\/em> and <em>Junior Swimmer Magazine<\/em> and Suburban Swim Club. He filled numerous positions on a number of boards of various organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Daland\u2019s contribution to aquatics and the sport globally is beyond \u201cremarkable.\u201d Daland\u2019s <a title=\"Tim Welsh Reflects On \u201cFather Figure\u201d Peter Daland\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tim-welsh-reflects-father-figure-peter-daland\/\" target=\"_blank\">life is known around the world as being marked by one of excellence, superior achievement and integrity<\/a>. Those attributes are undeniable. His life\u2019s work of nurturing athletes and helping them to become all that they could be in the pool and out, has left a lasting legacy of distinction and honor.<\/p>\n<p>And, FINA? What did they do? In FINA\u2019s News Reports and Press Releases this week, there is not one mention of condolences or even a byline marking the passing of Peter Daland.<\/p>\n<p>Going through every FINA Order, FINA Prize Eminence, or FINA Prize, there are no individuals who have accomplished anything in the sport even remotely on the same level as Peter Daland has.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing could be clearer: The storm clouds over the Putin World Championships and the global clash of values in sport governance are continuing to build.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commentary by Steven V.
