BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, April 30. INDIANA head coach Ray Looze and the Indiana swimming and diving program announced the addition of Donna Smailis (Highland, Ind.\/Highland) for the 2006-07 academic year. She joins Presley Bard (Napa, Calif.\/Napa), Brittany Barwegen (Plano, Texas\/Plano Senior), Emma Berry (Overland Park, Kan.\/Blue Valley Northwestern), Ashley Jones (Joliet, Ill.\/Minooka Community), Emily Lanteigne (Naperville, Ill.\/Naperville North), Cassie Luhrsen (O'Fallon, Ill.\/O'Fallon Township), Emily Porteous (Indianapolis, Ind.\/North Central), Alyssa Rosinko (Carmel, Ind.\/Carmel), Emily Schlatter (Grand Rapids, Mich.\/Grand Rapids Christian) and Amilee Smith (Ellicott City, Md.\/Howard) as part of the incoming class of 2006.<\/p>\n
"Donna was one of the top butterfly swimmers in the state of Indiana this year and we are very pleased to add her to next year's squad," Looze said. "She has tremendous potential and it will be fun to help her develop."<\/p>\n
A four-time All-American, Smailis posted a plethora of records while at Highland. Overall, she set four team, four pool, three freshman, two sophomore, two conference and two sectional records during her prep career. A four-time MVP of her squad, Smailis qualified for states each year, while also winning individual sectional championships in 2005 and 2006. <\/p>\n
Additionally, she claimed individual conference crowns from 2004-06. She also starred on the pitch for her soccer team as a two-time MVP who led her squad to four consecutive conference championships. Meanwhile, Smailis captured all-state and all-conference accolades in soccer during her high school career.<\/p>\n
"At Indiana, I will have a great opportunity to do better than I would ever think I would do," Smailis said. "Also, my brother, Steve, and friends will be there to support me."<\/p>\n
Away from the pool, Smailis garnered the President's and Spanish Honor Awards as well as served on the student council and as the vice president of the Sign Language Club.
