DETROIT, Michigan, April 27. THE Detroit Athletic Club (DAC), in keeping with its longstanding tradition of supporting athletics in the community, announced earlier this week that University of Michigan senior Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn.\/Webb School) is its first recipient of the Michigan Male College Athlete of the Year award. Calvin College's Lisa Winkle was selected as the female recipient. The award honors athletic achievement, academics and community service.<\/p>\n
Tarwater and Winkle were selected from among a list of collegiate
\nstudent-athletes within the state of Michigan by a committee of DAC
\nmembers who have been involved in amateur athletics for many years. The
\npair will be honored at the Dodge National Athletic awards, to benefit
\nthe March of Dimes, on May 15 at the DAC, along with the as yet
\nunannounced Michigan High School Athletes of the Year.<\/p>\n
A three-time NCAA champion (two individual, one relay) and 13-time
\nAll-American (six individual, seven relay), Tarwater is a political
\nscience major. He is U-M's 2006 Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor
\nrecipient, honoring excellence in scholarship and athletics, after
\nearning Academic All-Big Ten recognition in 2004, '05 and '06. A
\ntri-captain on U-M's 2005-06 team, Tarwater was active with U-M's C.S.
\nMott Children's Hospital, visiting patients and assisting with Mock
\nRock, U-M's annual fundraiser for the children's hospital.<\/p>\n
In four years at U-M, Tarwater won six Big Ten Conference titles (three
\nindividual, three relay), including three consecutive titles in the
\n200-yard butterfly (2004,'05,'06). He holds Big Ten records in the
\n100-yard butterfly (46.16), 200-yard butterfly (1:41.84) and 800-yard
\nfreestyle relay (6:18.11), and is a member of three additional U-M
\nrecord-setting relay teams: 400-yard freestyle relay (2:54.16),
\n200-yard medley relay (1:27.50) and 400-yard medley relay (3:11.04).<\/p>\n
Tarwater won two titles at the 2005 U.S. National Championships (spring
\n200-meter butterfly, summer 400-meter freestyle relay) and finished
\nfourth at the 2005 World Championships in the 200 butterfly. He
\nfinished fourth at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 fly and was
\na member of Team USA at the 2003 Pan-American Games and the 2001
\nGoodwill Games.<\/p>\n
Winkle competed for Calvin in both basketball and track and field. She
\nwas the 2006 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)
\nco-MVP in basketball and is a three-time All-MIAA first team selection.
\nShe is an All-American in track and field and three-time basketball
\nAll-American. A five-time member of the Calvin Dean's List, Winkle was
\nnamed to the 2005 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Academic
