The Wheaton Lyons swim team swept Brandeis University Saturday\u00a0with wins in the men&#8217;s (151.5-136.5) and women&#8217;s (191-94) meets.<\/p>\n<h2>Wheaton Press Release<\/h2>\n<p>The Wheaton College men\u2019s swimming and diving team opened up its 2014-15 season with a 151.5-136.5 victory over Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon on the road.<\/p>\n<p>The Lyons fashioned nine first place finishes en route to its third-straight win to start the season against the Judges. Wheaton defeated Brandeis 183-75 during the 2013-14 season and 163-120 in the 2012-13 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Wheaton began the meet with a first place finish in the 200-medley relay as sophomores Frederick Garneau (Glastonbury, Conn.\/Glastonbury) and Samuel Zarfos (Waterville, Maine\/Waterville Senior) and first-years Jonathan Dunnett (Cumberland, Maine\/Greely) and James Horne (Portsmouth, N.H.\/Berwick Academy) combined for a time of 1:41.81.<\/p>\n<p>Garneau went on to claim first place finishes in the 100-back (56.50) and the 200-back (2:02.27), while Zarfos touched first in the 100-breast with a time of 1:04.06. Classmate Todd Lambert (Mansfield, Conn.\/E.O. Smith) was second in the event in 1:05.60.<\/p>\n<p>Dunnett took top honors in the 200-IM with a time of 2:05.89, second place in the 100-fly (55.57) and third place in the 200-fly (2:07.01). Horne ranked second in the 50-free (22.69), third in the 100-free (51.30) and also helped the Lyons\u2019 400-free relay to a first place finish in 3:20.81 along with teammates Ross Johnston (Bar Harbor, Maine\/Mount Desert Island), Nick Fredette (Stoneham, Mass.\/Stoneham) and Richard Jenkins (Bow, N.H.\/Bow).<\/p>\n<p>Fredette produced a first place finish in the 200-breast (2:20.78), a runner-up showing in the 200-free with a time of 1:51.44 and a fourth place finish in the 50-free (23.95).<\/p>\n<p>On the diving boards, senior Ben Oliveri (Glastonbury, Conn.\/Glastonbury) won the one-meter dive with a score of 164.85 points and the three-meter dive with a score of 269.35. Sophomore Richard Davies (Wayland, Mass.\/Wayland) finished second in both events with scores of 149.70 and 237.90, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Wheaton returns to action next Saturday at the Charlie Batterman Relays on the campus of MIT at noon.<\/p>\n<p>The Wheaton College women\u2019s swimming &amp; diving team produced a 191-94 victory over Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon, on the road, to begin its 2014-15 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The Lyons opened up the dual meet by taking both first and second place in the 200-medley relay. Wheaton\u2019s \u2018A\u2019 relay team consisting of Kelley Baylis (Newtown, Conn.\/Newtown), Courtney Leach (Gilford, N.H.\/Gilford), Aleza Epstein (Amherst, N.Y.\/Sacred Heart Academy) and Charlotte Pitts (North Woodstock, N.H.\/Kimball Union Academy) combined for a first place time of 1:56.02, while the \u2018B\u2019 relay team of Skyler Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, Conn.\/Rocky Hill), Caroline Magnavita (South Glastonbury, Conn.\/Glastonbury), Cara Morris (Irvington, N.Y.\/Irvington) and Kelsey Meyer (Malvern, Pa.\/Conestoga) came in second place with a time of 1:57.04.<\/p>\n<p>Leach went on to win the 100-breast in 1:12.81 and also placed second in the 200-IM with a time of 2:22.64. Magnavita was second in the 100-breast (1:14.34) and first overall in the 200-breast (2:40.41). First-year Emily Reynolds (Oradell, N.J.\/River Dell) finished second in the 200-breast, while junior Merrill McCluskey (Nantucket, Mass.\/Nantucket) touched third in 2:47.87.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200-back, Rebecca Idman (Walpole, Mass.\/Walpole) took first place in 2:19.55, Dean-Lee ranked second (2:21.65) and first-year Joanna Zak (Clifton, N.J.\/Montclair Kimberley Academy) placed third in 2:21.84.<\/p>\n<p>Junior Ceara Bowman (Centerville, Mass.\/Portsmouth Abbey) touched first in the 1,000-free with a time of 11:47.96, while Pitts placed first in the 100-free (57.14) and second in the 200-fly (2:22.11).<\/p>\n<p>Epstein registered a first place finish in the 50-free (26.06) just beating Meyer who came in at 26.09 and a second place finish in the 200-free with a time of 2:03.81.<\/p>\n<p>First-year Jenna Hayden (South Berwick, Maine\/Berwick Academy) ranked first overall in the 100-back with a time of 1:02.66, while Baylis was second in 1:03.19, and also notched a first place effort in the 100-fly in 1:01.58.<\/p>\n<p>Classmate Lucy Frey (Andover, Mass.\/Phillips Andover) was second in the 500-free with a time of 5:47.10. Morris also placed third in the 100-free (58.99) and 100-fly (1:05.99).<\/p>\n<p>On the diving boards, junior Sydney Gillis (Walpole, Mass.\/Walpole) ranked first in the one-meter event (167.70) and the three-meter event (236.55). First-year Tori Popstein (Port Jervis, N.Y.\/Minisink Valley) ranked second in each event with scores of 141.45 and 190.25, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Wheaton returns to action next Saturday at the Charlie Batterman Relays on the campus of MIT at noon.<\/p>\n<h2>Brandeis Press Release<\/h2>\n<p>The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams open the 2014-15 campaign today against the Wheaton College Lyons. The Judges had 10 individual race wins on the afternoon, but Wheaton captured both head-to-head dual meets. Brandeis lost 151.5 to 136.5 on the men&#8217;s side, while the women fell, 191-94.<\/p>\n<p>The 15-point difference in the men&#8217;s meet came down to diving. With both Brandeis and Wheaton winning seven of the 14 swimming events, the Lyons outpointed the Judges 26-0 in the two diving events.<\/p>\n<p>The Judges had three individuals combine for their seven wins. Six races were captured by Brandeis&#8217;s two co-captains.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Max Fabian (Keene, N.H.\/Oak Meadow) had his usual outstanding performance in the distance freestyle events. In the 1,000, Fabian was a 27-second winner over rookie teammate Taku Harada (Henrico, Va. \/ Mills E. Godwin) with a time of 10:13.36. In his other two wins in the 500 free and the 200 butterfly, Fabian defeated another newcomer, Zach Diamond (Staten Island, N.Y. \/ Staten Island Academy). Fabian was three seconds faster in the 500 ( 4:58.93 to 5:01.15) and less than two seconds ahead in the fly (2:02.99 to 2:04.88).<\/p>\n<p>Junior Brian Luk (Hong Kong \/ Northfield Mount Hermon) took the two freestyle sprints over Wheaton foes. He swam 22.42 seconds in the 50 for a 0.27-second win and 48.40 in the 100 to win by 2.66 seconds. Luk also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.71 seconds, with a margin of victory of 0.86 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Brandeis&#8217;s final win came in the 200 freestyle, where rookie Cameron Braz (Monson, Mass.\/Monson) helped the Judges sweep the free events with a 0.30-second victory and time of 1:51.14.
