ATLANTA, Georgia, October 18. Emory swimming split with NCAA Division I UNC-Wilmington tonight as Emory’s women won, 157-131. \u00a0UNCW’s men managed a 152-142 victory.<\/p>\n
Valtteri Halonen won three events and UNCW held off a stubborn Emory team on Saturday for a 152-142 win in men’s swimming and diving action at the Brown Aquatic Center. The Seahawks fell to the Eagles, 157-131, in the women’s meet.<\/p>\n
The Seahawk men won their second straight and improved to 2-1 on the season. UNCW has beaten Emory in 18-of-19 meetings all-time. UNCW, though, fell to 0-4 on the women’s side.<\/p>\n
Halonen, who also swam on the winning 200 Medley Relay, topped the Seahawks with events wins in the 100 (50.80 seconds) and 200 Backstroke (1:50.83) and the 100 Fly (50.28). The win in the 100 Fly was his first of the season and the first time he swam the event this season.<\/p>\n
Senior Drew Gaertner won the 50 Free (21.35) and also swam the anchor legs of the winning 200 Medley and 200 Free Relay. Ned Tyler finished second in the 50 Free and swam on the winning 200 Free Relay.<\/p>\n
In the 200 Free Relay, the Seahawks held a 139-139 lead entering the event, but captured first and third to finish off the meet for the win.<\/p>\n
Junior Jenson Engen won the women’s 200 BreastStroke in a time of 2:22.26 for UNCW’s only win of the afternoon in the women’s meet. Engen also added a second-place finish in the 100 Breaststroke with Christine Souther taking third.<\/p>\n
In diving action, sophomore Nathan Lane scored 290.10 points in winning the 3-meter board and Giovanni Villanueva won the 1-meter with 274.28 points.<\/p>\n
The Seahawks visit Duke on Oct. 25 in an 11 a.m. start at the Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion.<\/p>\n
The Emory University Swimming and Diving Teams opened their 2014-15 intercollegiate dual meet schedule on Saturday afternoon with a split as the Emory men fell to NCAA Division I opponent the University of North Carolina \u2013 Wilmington 152-142, while the Emory women earned a 157-131 victory at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.<\/p>\n
Emory’s men and women combined to win 23 of the 32 events on Saturday, including 15 of the 16 events on the women’s side of the meet.<\/p>\n
Making her intercollegiate debut for Emory, freshman Ming Ong registered NCAA ‘B’ cut times en route to winning both the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.14) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.06), in addition to picking up a third individual event win the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.36 seconds. Sophomore Claire Liu added individual wins in both the 100-yard freestyle (52.13 seconds) and the 100-yard backstroke (57.19 seconds), registering ‘B’ cut marks in each. Liu also swam the freestyle leg of the Eagles’ winning 200-yard medley relay, teaming with freshman Cindy Cheng, sophomore Annelise Kowalsky and sophomore Kristine Rosenberger to record an NCAA qualifying time of 1:45.89, and was a part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team with Ong, freshman Julia Wawer and senior Nancy Larson (1:36.36).<\/p>\n
Senior co-captain McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg added a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:25.18, while also claiming a victory in the 200-yard butterfly with a ‘B’ cut time of 2:06.28. Kowalsky claimed a victories in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.56) and 200-yard individual medley (2:09.18) and was the runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke with a ‘B’ cut time of 2:22.36.<\/p>\n
Rounding out the women’s top finishers on Saturday were junior Ellie Thompson, who won the 200-yard backstroke with a provisional time of 2:03.75, sophomore Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe, who won the 100-yard butterfly (58.63 seconds), and freshman Mara Rosenstock, who won both the one-meter dive (278.78) and the three-meter dive (261.68). Her one-meter dive score was good for an NCAA qualifying mark.<\/p>\n
For the Emory men, junior Andrew Wilson swept the breaststroke events with NCAA ‘B’ cut times in each. He was the top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 56.53 seconds, and later won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.87. Wilson added a victory in the 200-individual medley with a mark of 1:54.76.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Christian Baker claimed a pair of wins for Emory, finishing first in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.32) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:39.47). Other event winners for the Emory men included freshman Henry Copses in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:45.13), senior co-captain Hayden Baker in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.61) and freshman Alexander Hardwick in the 100-yard freestyle (46.42 seconds).<\/p>\n
Next up for the Eagles will be a dual meet at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, November 1st at 1:00 PM.<\/p>\n
