DAVIS, California, October 18. San Jose State women’s swimming went into Davis and came out the victor with a 172-128 against UC Davis.<\/p>\n
The San Jos\u00e9 State women\u2019s swimming and diving team continued its strong start to the season defeating UC Davis in a head-to-head match, 172-128, Friday at the Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis, Calif.<\/p>\n
“This was a tremendous team performance today,\u201d said head coach Sage Hopkins. \u201cTop to bottom, from every class. Davis is a solid program, and our swimmers and divers came in ready to compete. We came out of the second diving break very fired up, winning the next four events and winning 7 out of the 8 final events. Our Spartan swimmers and divers are a tough team that is very focused and very tight knit.”<\/p>\n
San Jos\u00e9 State was led by freshman Morgan McCormick, as she finished with three individual first place finishes. McCormick took the top spot in the 100 back (56.81), 200 back (2:02.89) and 200 IM (2:05.63).<\/p>\n
Junior Riley Spitser also had a strong day for the Spartans, ending the meet with a pair of first place finishes in the 1000 free (10:11.35) and 500 Free (4:58.18).<\/p>\n
Freshman Cari Reiswig continues to impress on the diving board for the Spartans. The Galt, Calif. native, took the 1-meter springboard with a total score of 296.48, breaking the previous school record of 294.75 set by Amy Kilby against UCSC in 2011. Reiswig also took the top spot in the 3-meter platform with a score of 321.60.<\/p>\n
San Jos\u00e9 State will be back in action on Saturday, October 25, at UC Santa Cruz at 9:00 a.m. followed by a meet at the Aquatic Center in San Jose at 4:00 p.m.<\/p>\n
UC Davis sophomore Hilvy Cheung took home titles in both the 100 and 200 fly, while three other Aggies took home victories on the day, but it wasn’t enough to hold off visiting San Jose State as the Spartans broke open a close meet en route to a 172-128 dual win on Friday afternoon at the Schaal Aquatics Center.<\/p>\n
The loss ended a streak of 16 consecutive dual wins for UC Davis (0-1) dating back to 2012, while SJSU (1-0) avenged a loss to the Aggies last season, winning 11 of the 16 events on the day.<\/p>\n
Cheung opened the day by touching first in the 200 fly in a time of 2:02.27, and followed that up with a time of 55.92 for the win in the 100 fly. Senior Samantha Shellem won UC Davis’ first event of the day, claiming the 200 free in a time of 1:52.25, and was followed two events later by Hailey Ferko’s win in the 100 breast in a time of 1:05.43.<\/p>\n
Freshman Courtney Schultz brought home the Aggies final win of the day, claiming the 50 free in 23.79 in her Division I debut — just .01 of a second off the school’s top 10 list in that event and .14 off Kayleigh Foley’s pool record set in 2012.<\/p>\n
Morgan McCormick won three events to lead the Spartans, claiming both distances in the backstroke plus the 200 IM, while Riley Spitser doubled in the distance freestyle events, and Cari Reiswig won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.<\/p>\n
After San Jose State claimed both the 200 medley relay and 1000 free, the Aggies began to chip away, winning four of the next five events. Shellem’s win in the 200 free started a rally that included three straight UC Davis wins in the 100 breast, 200 fly, and 50 free — outscoring the Spartans, 35-22, in that stretch — to close to within five points at 68-63.<\/p>\n
The Aggie divers took five of the top six spots on the 1-meter board, led by Lucy Lafranchise’s score of 275.85 to finish second, to trail by just six points, 78-72, at the halfway point, but the Spartans pulled away quickly, winning seven of the final eight events to nail down the win. Lafranchise’s score is a career-high on the 1-meter and the second-highest score in the event in school history.<\/p>\n
Cheung was the leading point-scorer for UC Davis with 22 points, adding an additional four points as part of the Aggies’ 200 medley relay squad, while Shellem was the next highest scorer with 16. McCormick contributed 27 points to San Jose State’s effort, as the Spartans had three of the top four individual scorers on the day.<\/p>\n
UC Davis jumps right back in the pool on Saturday (Oct. 18) at 10 a.m., with a non-scoring dual at Pacific beginning at 10 a.m. in Stockton, California.<\/p>\n
