DALLAS, Texas, October 17. Seven nation-leading times were posted Friday night during the first night of racing at the annual SMU Classic. The LSU women’s swimming and diving team holds a slim 7.5-point lead after nine events with 160 points, followed by Louisville (152.50 points) and host SMU (143 points).<\/p>\n

LSU kicked off the meet with a narrow win in the 400 medley relay as Caley Oquist, Colleen O’Neil, Amber Carter and Leah Troskot touched out SMU’s Isabella Arcila, Tara-Lynn Nicholas, Marne Erasmus and Adrienn Santa, 3:35.86 to 3:35.87. Both times cleared Florida’s nation-leading time of 3:41.26 from the All Florida Invite.<\/p>\n

In the 400 IM, Louisville’s Tanja Kyllianinen put up the top time at 4:10.89, while USC’s Jasmine Tosky had the second-best time from the B final at 4:12.34. Sophie Weber of LSU placed second in the A final with a 4:12.70. Those three times rank as the fastest in the nation thus far this season.<\/p>\n

USC’s Chelsea Chenault followed up with another nation-leading time in the 200 free, as she topped the field in 1:45.31. Chenault knocked off Cal’s Missy Franklin (1:46.37) for the quickest time of the season. Louisville’s Abbie Houck swam a 1:47.55 to take second, while LSU’s Megan Cox rounded out the top three in 1:47.72.<\/p>\n

SMU’s Isabella Arcila swam the third-best time in the country on her way to a win in the 50 free at 22.56. Amber Carter of LSU (22.87) finished second, while NC State’s Lauren Poli and Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell posted matching 22.92s for third.<\/p>\n

Miami’s Thea Vock was the class of the field in the women’s 1-meter diving event, scoring 303.50 points to beat LSU’s Alex Bettridge (296.95) and NC State’s Rachael Mumma (292.90).<\/p>\n

Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell put up yet another nation-leading time, this time in the 100 fly. Worrell touched first in 52.12, with LSU’s Amber Carter registering another top three finish in 52.86. Marne Erasmus of SMU picked up third in 53.25. Both Worrell and Carter’s times bested Tina Bechtel’s 53.03 from the Kentucky-Florida dual meet last night.<\/p>\n

The streak continued in the 100 back, as USC freshman Hannah Weiss cracked 53 for the win, touching in 52.95. Florida’s Sinead Russell had the previous top time of the season at 53.23 from the All Florida Invite. LSU’s Caley Oquist came in second at 53.41, followed by SMU’s Isabella Arcila (53.84).<\/p>\n

SMU’s Rachel Nicol nearly became the first swimmer to break 1:00 in the women’s 100 breast this season, but settled for a winning time of 1:00.18. That’s still nearly seven tenths faster than Tennessee’s Molly Hannis, who held the previous season best at 1:00.84. Louisville’s Andee Cottrell placed second in 1:00.60, while SMU’s Tara-Lynn Nicholas had the third-best swim from the B final at 1:01.46.<\/p>\n

Louisville wrapped up the evening with a win in the 800 free relay as Kelsi Worrell, Abbie Houck, Andrea Kneppers and Rachel Grooms touched in 7:12.27, the fastest time of the season by eight seconds. USC claimed second in 7:16.50, followed by LSU at 7:16.89.<\/p>\n
