AMES, Iowa, October 17. Iowa State swimming started the season strong with a 203-91 triumph against South Dakota State in Beyer Hall.<\/p>\n
The Iowa State swimming and diving team started the 2014-15 season strong with a 203-91 win over South Dakota State Friday in Beyer Hall, pushing the all-time series record to 10-0.<\/p>\n
The Cyclones got off to a quick start sweeping six of the first seven races, taking a 106-25 lead into the diving well for the one-meter event. Iowa State went on to take first-place in all 16 events on the evening.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe knew we would be a little bit stronger than South Dakota State,\u201d head swimming coach Duane Sorenson said. \u201cWe challenged our women to standup, race and push each other. I\u2019m really pleased with how we improved off our intra squad meet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Redshirt senior Carissa Poeschel was back in the water for Iowa State after missing all of last year due to ankle surgery. Poeschel had a convincing performance with three top-three performances in the 400 medley relay, 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this point in the season, I actually feel like I\u2019m ahead of where I usually am, and I\u2019m happy with that,\u201d Poeschel said.<\/p>\n
The Cyclones owned the diving well as Elyse Brouillette and Julie Dickinson took first and second-place, respectively, in both the one and three-meter diving events. Brouillette bounced back from an incomplete dive on her three-meter set to take first with a score of 247.05.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not going to give up any points just because I had a bad dive. I just focused on improving my scores on the dives afterwards,\u201d Brouillette said. \u201cWe had a lot of nerves on the boards today, but Julie really stepped up. We showed a lot of confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Iowa State newcomers showed up in a big way, as five of the seven freshmen earned points or for the Cyclones. Freshman Laura Miksch and Freshman Mary Kate Luddy took first-place in the 50 and 1000 freestyle with times of 0:24.39 and 10:38.92, respectively.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just a great confidence builder for them to win their first collegiate meet,\u201d Sorenson said. \u201cWe knew this class was talented. Because of the lineup we swam tonight, they were given the opportunity to win races, and they took advantage of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
South Dakota State (0-2, 0-0) made the trek to Iowa State Friday night and fell, 203-91.<\/p>\n
Julia Bodnaruk and Emily Rosenthal went one-two in the 1000 free with times of 10:56.61 and 11:02.25, respectively.<\/p>\n
In the 100 free, SDSU placed second, third and fourth as Katya Vakshteyn, Olivia Bartel and Kayce Smith finished with respective times of 54.96, 56.13 and 57.03. Likewise in the 100 back, Jade Goosen, Kalen Critchley and Elizabeth Buchholz finished in 1:02.50, 1:02.85 and 1:05.19, good for second, third and fourth, respectively.<\/p>\n
In the 100 breaststroke, Emily Campbell and Jessie Hendricks placed second and third with times of 1:07.11 and 1:12.29, respectively, while Sydney Rasmussen took fourth with a time of 1:12.94.<\/p>\n
On the boards Alecia Winston placed second on the 1-meter board with a score of 236.47, while Olivia Olesiak placed took fourth with a 234.90 mark. On the 3-meter board, Olesiak placed third with a score of 238.35, while Winston took fourth with a score of 237.90.<\/p>\n
In the 400 medley relay, SDSU A finished fourth as Cassie Hendricks, Emily Campbell, Nicole Grimit and Jade Goosen touched in 4:03.87. The SDSU A relay also took fourth in the 200 free relay as Abby Zenner, Goosen, Mckenna Shallberg and Grimit touched in 1:40.60.<\/p>\n
