Iowa swimming had a strong Big Ten meet against Michigan State with a pair of wins at McCaffree Pool. \u00a0The Iowa men won 174-126, while the women claimed a 196-103 victory.<\/p>\n<h2>Iowa Press Release<\/h2>\n<p>The University of Iowa women\u2019s swimming and diving team scored a 196-103 Big Ten win over Michigan State on Friday in East Lansing, Michigan. The Hawkeyes (2-1) recorded 13 first-place finishes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a lot of great things happening tonight,\u201d said UI head coach Marc Long. \u201cWe swam competitively in every event and overall did well on the road showing a lot of growth. Credit to Michigan State, they swam really well and gave us a good challenge. Anytime you can get a Big Ten win it\u2019s a good accomplishment and I\u2019m really proud of the way we swam tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 200 medley relay quartet of Meghan Lavelle, Emma Sougstad, Ashley Horodyski, and Olivia Kabacinski were the first to put Iowa on the board swimming to a first place finish with a time of 1:44.00.<\/p>\n<p>Kabacinski claimed four top-finishes on the night. The junior native of La Porte, Indiana, swam top times in the 200 free (1:52.19), 100 free (51.90), and as a member of the 400 free relay (3:27.67).<\/p>\n<p>Sougstad closed the meet adding an additional pair of top-finishes; first in the 50 free (23.61) and once more as a member of the 400 free relay (3:27.67).<\/p>\n<p>Seniors Becky Stoughton and Hillary Weigand finished with the top two times in the 1,000 free. Stoughton claimed first place with a time of 10:02.17. Weigand took runner up with a time of 10:21.99<\/p>\n<p>Stoughton also posted top times in the 500 free (4:59.05), and as a member of the 400 free relay (3:27.67).<\/p>\n<p>UI freshmen Rowan Hauber and Meghan Lavelle claimed top finishes in the 100 backstroke. Hauber claimed first-place coming in at 56.37; less than a second ahead of Lavelle who finished runner up (56.57).<\/p>\n<p>In the diving well the Hawkeyes claimed top finishes on the 1-meter from Joelle Christy and Lauren Kelba. Christy dove to a first-place finish with a score of 304.54. Kelba finished runner up diving to a score of 281.10. The two also placed in the top five in 3 meter competition. Christy finished runner up (302.40), and Kelba placed fourth (277.98).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur divers really did fantastic tonight,\u201d said UI diving coach Todd Waikel. \u201cI\u2019m really pleased with how we competed and fought. I thought we may have left some points out there that we could have taken advantage of but our competitive edge shined and our performance as a whole was outstanding. I saw some bright spots though and that\u2019s a good way to finish as we go back to training and prepare for Minnesota.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hawkeyes return to the pool Oct. 31 squaring off with Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at 5 p.m. (CT).<\/p>\n<p>The University of Iowa men\u2019s swimming and diving team scored a 174-126 Big Ten win over Michigan State on Friday in East Lansing, Michigan. The Hawkeyes (1-1) recorded 11 first-place finishes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a lot of great things happening tonight,\u201d said UI head coach Marc Long. \u201cWe swam competitively in every event and overall did well on the road. Anytime you can get a Big Ten win it\u2019s a good accomplishment and I\u2019m really proud of the way we swam tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The quartet of Grant Betulius, Roman Trussov, Jerzey Twarowski, and Brandon Farnum put Iowa on top with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay swimming to a time of 1:30.96.<\/p>\n<p>The foursome of Betulius, Trussov, Farnum, and Joseph Halsmer added to the Hawkeye lead following with a top finish in the 400 free relay. The group swam to a time of 3:04.44.<\/p>\n<p>Trussov had a breakout meet collecting first-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (55.28) and 200 breaststroke (2:01.65).<\/p>\n<p>Betulius swam to a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke swimming to a time of 49.31, and a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.07. Iowa took the top-three finishes in the 200 backstroke. Chris Freeman won the race swimming to a time of 1:49.40, and Andrew Parker swam to a second-place finish with a time of 1:50.41.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe energy of the team tonight was awesome,\u201d said Betulius. \u201cMichigan State was ready for us and brought the competition all night and we fought right back. We found some success and bright spots and we\u2019re able get a few wins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UI freshman Jerzey Twarowski swam to three first-place finishes; twice as a member of relay teams, as well as a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.79.<\/p>\n<p>In the diving well, the Hawkeyes were led by Addison Boschult and Brandis Heffner who each dove to second place finishes. Boschult claimed runner up in 3-meter competition diving to a score of 316.12. Heffner gathered a second-place finish in the 1-meter with a score of 302.85. UI freshman Matt Mauser finished fourth in 1-meter competition with a score of 264.29.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur divers really did fantastic tonight,\u201d said UI diving coach Todd Waikel. \u201cI\u2019m really pleased with how we competed and fought. In both events we were right there nearing the top finishers, Boschult and Heffner were just one and two points behind the 3-meter champion tonight and both dove really well. The men&#8217;s team lost, 174-126, and the women&#8217;s team lost, 196-103.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel really good about today&#8217;s performance,&#8221; said head coach Matt Gianiodis. &#8220;I feel our kids really have the idea that they can push and compete with a Big Ten team. I feel we have gained a lot of confidence as a program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Lachie McLeish notched the first victory of the day for MSU in the 200 freestyle. McLeish finished with a time of 1.40.36. He also took first place in the 100 freestyle clocking in at 46.12.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 butterfly, junior Elizabeth Brown took first place with a time of 2:03.76. Senior Hannah Pugh finished in second at 2:05.55. On the men&#8217;s side junior Nate Weeks had his best time at Michigan State, coming away victorious at 1:50.44. Weeks also won the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.85.<\/p>\n<p>Junior Betsy Good finished in first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.42. Good was followed by senior Taylor Folkertsma who took second (55.12) and junior Jill Stoneburg who took third (56.11).<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 butterfly, sophomore Sarah Love had the fastest time at 56.38<\/p>\n<p>The Spartans found success on the boards today. The MSU divers came away winners of three of the four events. Sophomore Brennan LaBar won at both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. LeBar&#8217;s core at the 3-meter is his best at Michigan State and qualifies him for 2015 NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, along with his 1-meter dive (313.35). Senior Alison Menzies was victorious on the women&#8217;s 1-meter with a score of 323.7.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The divers did a great job today,&#8221; said diving coach Eric Best. &#8220;We won three of the four events today, so it was a good performance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Spartans are back in action in two weeks as the teams travel to Buffalo, New York.
