BOSTON, Massachusetts, October 17. The MIT men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were tabbed as the unanimous favorites to repeat as New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) champions in the conference preseason poll, voted by the league coaches and announced on Friday.<\/p>\n
The Engineer men picked up all 11 first-place votes, after claiming their sixth-straight conference title winter. WPI and Coast Guard followed in second and third in the voting. The Engineers finished a program-best second last season while the Bears have claimed six league titles, including three straight from 2006-2008. Springfield College and Wheaton College rounded out the top-five in the poll, followed by Babson College and Clark University.<\/p>\n
On the women’s side, MIT was again a unanimous first-place selection, a year after locking up a fourth consecutive NEWMAC title a season ago. Ten-time champion Springfield College was voted second following a strong runner-up finish in 2013, while four-time winner Wellesley College was picked third, after earning the same result a year ago.<\/p>\n
WPI and Wheaton College came in at fourth and fifth on the list, with both teams finishing in the top-five in 2013. Mount Holyoke College was tabbed sixth in the voting, while Coast Guard Academy and Clark University were seventh and eighth respectively. Smith College and Babson College rounded out the poll, in ninth and 10th places.<\/p>\n
The NEWMAC swimming and diving championship will begin on Thursday, February 19th at WPI\u2019s Sports and Recreation Center. The four-day event will conclude on Sunday, February 23rd.<\/p>\n
