DURBAN, South Africa, April 19. THE first day of the South African Championships featured a pair of championship finals and the last race for Ryk Neethling for two months. In the 400 freestyles, Melissa Corfe and Troyden Prinsloo claimed first-place finishes, with Corfe prevailing in a time of 4:17.36. As for Prinsloo, he was the only male to crack the four-minute mark as he touched the wall in 3:54.47.<\/p>\n
Contesting the 50 freestyle, Neethling clocked a semifinal time of 22.74, quicker than the 22.86 he recorded during the preliminaries. Neethling, though, indicated that he\u2019ll bypass the championship final and begin a two-month rest period. Following his break, Neethling will begin preparation for the 2007 World Champs in Melbourne. Neethling recently won the 100 and 200 freestyles and the 100 individual medley at the World Short Course Championships.<\/p>\n
Lauren Roets was easily the fastest qualifier for the final of the women\u2019s 50 free as she checked in with a time of 26.12 during the semifinals. The top swim of the women\u2019s meet was the 1:10.08 effort of Suzaan Van Biljon in the semifinals of the 100 breaststroke. Corfe also qualified for the 200 back final as the top seed, thanks to a mark of 2:18.26.<\/p>\n
In the men\u2019s 100 breast, William Diering advanced to the championship heat with the fastest qualifying time, a swim of 1:02.86.
