AMHERST, Massachusetts, October 13. Massachusetts women\u2019s swimming & diving head coach Bob Newcomb has announced that Ellie Monobe has joined the program as an assistant coach.<\/p>\n
Monobe was a four-year letterwinner at the University of California, Berkeley where she was a member of two NCAA Championship teams.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very excited to have Ellie join our staff,\u201d Newcomb said. \u201cShe brings with her a tremendous background in collegiate and club swimming and will help us continue with the growth our program has shown in the last four years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prior to arriving in Amherst in late Sept., she served as the co-head coach of the Sun Valley Swim Team in Lafayette, California since May 2013. She helped lead the Rays to a second place finish in the Lafayette Swim Conference \u2013 their best in program history.<\/p>\n
A year earlier she was the head coach for the Bentley School varsity program where the Phoenix recorded its most successful season in school history during the 2012 spring schedule.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am thrilled for the opportunity to work alongside Bob and the team at UMass,\u201d Monobe said. \u201cBob has done a phenomenal job with the program and his relationships with his athletes\u2019 are exemplary. I look forward to contributing to this program and building on the culture of success that he has established here.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition to her coaching duties over the past two years, the Fremont, California native gained valuable experience at San Jose State University while earning her master\u2019s degree in Sport Management. She was a compliance assistant during the 2013-14 academic year and a graduate manager for the Spartan women\u2019s swimming & diving squad that captured the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Championship.<\/p>\n
Monobe received her bachelor\u2019s degree from Cal in American Studies in 2011 after a standout career for the Bears. She swam the breaststroke and individual medley events for legendary coach Teri McKeever and was the team captain in their national championship season of 2010-11.<\/p>\n
The Bears finished third in the 2010 NCAA meet after claiming their first-ever national title in 2009 during Monobe\u2019s sophomore season.<\/p>\n
She competed for Mission San Jose Aquatics throughout her prep career and for Mission San Jose High School. Monobe was a Junior National Finalist and Senior National qualifier in the 200 and 100 Breaststroke.<\/p>\n
