The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams completed the final day of competition of the West Virginia State Games earlier tonight in Huntington, West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams placed first overall. The women posted a team score of 1,445.5, finishing ahead of second-place Marshall (1,287). The men recorded 1,598.5 team points, besting second-place West Virginia Tech by nearly 1,000 points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a solid day. I was really impressed with our effort from both teams,\u201d said coach Vic Riggs. \u201cI was pleased by some of the adjustments our freshmen are making to their race strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senior diver Haily Vande Poel got her final season off to a strong start by sweeping the women\u2019s 3-meter and 1-meter diving events. Vande Poel posted a score of 304.05 in the 3-meter and a score of 271.50 in the 1-meter.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a Mountaineer sweep in the men\u2019s diving events with Mike Proietto winning the 3-meter (225.75) and 1-meter (284.55).<\/p>\n<p>Other highlights from the meet included a sweep from Jaimee Gillmore in the women\u2019s 50 and 100 free events.<\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, Andrew Marsh claimed first in five individual events. Marsh swept the 50 and 100 free events, while also placing first in the 100 fly (50.54), 100 back (49.56) and 200 back (1:53.49).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis meet is always tough with all the swims in a such a short time,\u201d Riggs said. \u201cOverall, I\u2019m very pleased with the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senior Julie Ogden placed first in the women\u2019s 200 fly (2:06.96) and finished second in the women\u2019s 100 fly (58.14). Ogden also played a pivotal role on the women\u2019s 200 free relay, 400 medley relay and 200 medley relay teams, helping all to first-place finishes.<\/p>\n<p>The Mountaineers will have a week off before hosting Penn State on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the WVU Natatorium.<\/p>\n<p><em>The above article is a press release submitted to Swimming World.
