VERMILLION, South Dakota, October 11. South Dakota women’s swimming took down Minnesota State, 175-116, in the season opener at the DakotaDome.<\/p>\n

South Dakota Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n

The South Dakota women\u2019s swimming and diving team won 11 of 16 events en route to their 175-116 defeat of Minnesota State in the Coyotes\u2019 season opener Friday at the DakotaDome. The meet results were tallied using dual meet scoring with the winner of each event earning nine points, the runner-up earning four, third-place earning three, fourth earning two and fifth earning one.<\/p>\n

Sophomore Sam Schutt won three of five freestyle events to lead the Coyotes. She recorded a time of 59.50 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle, 2:08.12 for the 200-meter and 4:36.52 for 400 meters. Schutt placed third in the 200-yard free at the Summit League Championships a year ago to earn all-Summit League honors.
\nSisters Rachel Svendson and Katie Svendson recorded a 1-2 finish in the 800-meter freestyle with times of 9:36.51 and 9:37.87, respectively. The two also followed Schutt in the 400-meter freestyle. Rachel finished second in 4:46.03 and Katie third in 4:46.96.<\/p>\n

Freshman Kellee Lekavy won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 27.38 seconds, closely followed by freshman Emily Lundstrom in 27.68. The freshman duo also finished 2-3 behind Schutt in the 100-meter free. Lundstrom was second with a time of 1:00.74 and Lekavy was third in 1:01.50.<\/p>\n

Fellow freshman Kassidie Cornell recorded a pair of wins in the breaststroke events. Cornell won the 100 meters with a time of 1:17.49 and the 200 meters in 2:49.04. Sophomore Berkley Nowlan finished runner-up in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:19.01.<\/p>\n

The Coyotes finished 1-2-3 in the butterfly events. For 100 meters, junior Hannah Veselik led with a time of 1:08.08 followed by junior Molly Knowles (1:09.71) and sophomore Erin Kleiner (1:10.33). In the 200-meter fly, senior Kate Dailey led in a time of 2:34.04 followed by Veselik (2:36.19) and Knowles (2:37.19).<\/p>\n

Sophomores Greysen Hertting and Anastasia Zabel finished 1-2 in the three-meter diving competition. Hertting recorded 258.05 points while Zabel followed with 200.92. A year ago, Hertting swept the one- and three-meter dives at the Summit League Championships to earn Diver of the Year honors.<\/p>\n

South Dakota\u2019s 400-meter medley relay consisting of sophomore Tayler Kirtley, Cornell, Veselik and sophomore Allie Pfauth finished six seconds ahead of the next relay, recording a time of 4:33.16.<\/p>\n

The Minnesota State swimming and diving team opened its season with 175-116 loss to the University of South Dakota Friday evening.<\/p>\n

As a team, Minnesota State posted the top finish in four swim events<\/p>\n

Freshman Cecilia Hake won the 100-meter backstroke event with a time of 1:08.04, with senior Emily Green following close behind in second place with a mark of 1:08.21.<\/p>\n

The 200-meter backstroke event saw freshman Chelsea Calhoun come out on top with a time of 2:27.47. Green finished third in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:30.49 as well.<\/p>\n

Freshman Carley LeDoux took first place in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:38.89, with junior Jade Ely following in second place with a time of 2:39.84.<\/p>\n

The Mavericks also won the 400-meter freestyle relay as Green, Calhoon, Ely and senior Tessa Cady posted a time of 4:13.30.<\/p>\n

The Mavericks return home on Friday, Oct. 17, as they take on UW-Eau Claire at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n
