NASHVILLE, Tennessee, October 11. Vanderbilt swimming hosted plenty of swimming on the first night of its season with San Diego State, Campbell and UALR all heading into Nashville.<\/p>\n
Vanderbilt Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n Vanderbilt’s swimming team kicked off its first home meet of the season Friday afternoon at the Centennial Sportsplex. The `Dores finished 2-1, falling to San Diego State, 145-112. VU defeated Campbell, 207-54, and UALR, 213-45. Friday’s event was the home debut for nine Commodore student-athletes.<\/p>\n Vandy had an impressive day in the pool, coming in first place in five of 14 events. Senior Elly Faulkner led the `Dores, winning two of the five events she was entered.<\/p>\n “It was a good day,” said Vanderbilt head coach Jeremy Organ. “We’ve really been working hard in the pool the last few weeks and I think it showed. Tomorrow I’m looking forward to seeing how we handle back-to-back days. Hopefully everyone gets a good nights rest. It’s always a benefit to be able to go home and seep in your bed then come back and race hard.”<\/p>\n Kathryn Coughlin was the first Commodore of the day to earn first place, swimming with a time of 1:04.54 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Faulkner followed after winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.82. Carrie Bencic won the 500-yard freestyle event, swimming with a time of 5:02.20.<\/p>\n Vanderbilt continued its success placing first and second in the 200-yard IM with Faulkner taking first with a time of 2:06.60, and Kara Lucenti finishing second coming in at 2:07.38. After an early start disqualification in lane six by San Diego State, the Commodores won first and second place of the final event, 400 free relay, with a time of 3:31.56 and 3:36.31 respectively.<\/p>\n San Diego State Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n San Diego State won 10 of 14 swimming events as it recorded dual meet victories over Vanderbilt (145-112), Arkansas-Little Rock (190-60) and Campbell (184-73) Friday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. The triple dual consisted of only the swim events with no diving being contested as the Aztec improve to 4-0 on the young season. With the three wins, SDSU is now 63-1 in its last 64 dual meets.<\/p>\n The Aztecs began the meet by capturing the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Anika Apostalon, Cecilia Zaccarelli, Loreen Whitfield and Whitney Weisz went 1:43.76 to capture top honors. SDSU also took second in the event with Chelsea Bailey, Laura Day, Summer Harrison and Taylor Johnson clocking a 1:44.14.<\/p>\n Apostalon, Natilee Ruiz and Frida Berggren also went on to collect a pair of individual wins in their respective events.<\/p>\n Apostalon won both the 100 backstroke (1:43.76) and 100 freestyle (50.00) while Ruiz was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:50.98) and 200 backstroke (2:02.27). Berggren picked up wins in the 200 butterfly (2:03.67) and 200 individual medley (2:05.42) and also took fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:03.78).<\/p>\n Freshman Summer Harrison picked up her inaugural first-place finish as an Aztec with a win in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 55.61 goes into the SDSU record book as the seventh-fastest time in program history. In addition, teammate Loreen Whitfield’s second-place mark of 55.79 in the race is the ninth-fastest ever by an SDSU swimmer.<\/p>\n San Diego State’s other individual victories came in the 50 free where Bailey turned in a time of 23.54 and in the 1000 free with Dana Michaels winning in 10:20.77. Michaels also recorded a second-place finish in the 500 free with a mark of 5:03.33.<\/p>\n Campbell Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n Campbell placed seven individuals in top-five positions to defeat Arkansas-Little Rock 179-79 Friday at the Centennial Sportsplex. The Camels also fell to host Vanderbilt 207-54 and San Diego State 184-73.<\/p>\n SDSU, meanwhile, knocked off Vanderbilt 145-112 and UALR 190-60 to go 3-0 on the day. Vandy also topped UALR 213-45 in the Commmodores\u2019 home opener.<\/p>\n The 1-2 day makes Campbell 1-3 in the early going.<\/p>\n Sarah Jabusch led off with a fourth place finish in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:29.31.<\/p>\n Junior Lily Tang tallied two top-five finishes on the day, first taking third in the 100 backstroke with a 58.61, then fourth in the 200 back, recording a 2:05.77 mark. In the 200 fly, Michelle Case posted a time of 2:04.99, also taking fourth.<\/p>\n Tang, Caroline Clark and Jabusch went third, fourth and fifth in the 200 IM, with Tang\u2019s 2:11.36 leading the way. Campbell closed out the meet with a third place finish in the 400 free relay, registering a 3:37.65.<\/p>\n Campbell will travel to Asheville, N.C. on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a dual meet with fellow CCSA member UNC Asheville at 10:00 a.m. CU returns home Oct. 18, hosting North Carolina A&T.<\/p>\n
