ATHENS, Georgia, October 10. The University of Georgia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams kicked off their seasons in style tonight as both teams defeated Alabama. The Bulldog men came out on top, 164-128, while the Lady Bulldogs extended their Georgia all-sports record to 91 straight home wins with a 164-130 victory.<\/p>\n

Tynan Stewart led the way for the Bulldogs with three individual wins. He had to wait through nine events before his first individual event, but the wait didn’t seem to affect his performance as he touched out teammate Mick Litherland in the 200 fly, 1:46.96 to 1:47.03. Following the diving break, Stewart picked up two more wins in the 200 back (1:46.29) and 100 fly (48.41).<\/p>\n

Two other Bulldogs – Nicolas Fink and Kevin Litherland – also won multiple events. Fink won the 100 breast (55.02) and 200 breast (2:01.64), while Litherland won the 1650 free (15:28.25) and 500 free (4:29.99). Jay Litherland touched first in the 200 free (1:38.64) and had the fastest time in the 400 IM (3:58.54) as an exhibition swimmer. Michael Trice added a win in the 100 free (45.03) for Georgia.<\/p>\n

For Alabama, Luke Kaliszak (100 back, 48.23), Kristian Gkolomeev (50 free, 19.87) and Taylor Charles (400 IM, 4:03.40) each picked up a win. Alabama’s Connor Oslin, Pavel Romanov, Brett Walsh and Kristian Gkolomeev topped the opening 200 medley relay in 1:28.46, while Walsh and Gkolomeev were also a part of the winning 400 free relay (3:02.04).<\/p>\n

Georgia’s Ian Forlini (1-meter, 326.48) and Alabama’s Dylan Marin (3-meter, 345.75) earned wins in the diving well.<\/p>\n

On the women’s side, Maddie Locus and Kylie Stewart each contributed two individual wins for the Georgia women. Stewart swept the backstroke events, touching in 53.75 in the 100 and 1:57.27 in the 200. Locus proved to be the top sprinter of the day, registering times of 22.94 in the 50 free and 50.44 in the 100 free.<\/p>\n

Georgia’s Annie Zhu had the top time in the 200 breast (2:15.01), just edging Alabama’s Kaylin Burchell (2:15.18). Burchell topped Zhu in the 100 breast, 1:02.13 to 1:03.48.<\/p>\n

Brittany MacLean (1650 free, 16:28.26), Megan Kingsley (200 fly, 1:59.46), Amber McDermott (500 free, 4:51.07) and Lauren Harrington (100 fly, 54.78) also picked up wins for Georgia, while Emma Saunders (200 free, 1:48.37) and Mia Nonnenberg (400 IM, 4:15.04) won events for Alabama.<\/p>\n

Georgia’s quartet of Olivia Smoliga, Emily Cameron, Lauren Harrington and Maddie Locus topped the 200 medley relay in 1:41.42, while Alabama’s Kristel Vourna, Temarie Tomley, Bailey Scott and Emma Saunders got to the wall first in the 400 free relay in 3:23.92.<\/p>\n

Olivia Ball of Georgia topped the 3-meter diving event with 294.30 points, while Alabama’s Taylor Zablocki had the highest point total in the 1-meter with 286.80 points.<\/p>\n
