GAINESVILLE, Georgia, October 7. TENNESSEE\u2019S sprint program will add some strong firepower next season, with the announcement that Ty Powers will head to Knoxville to become a Volunteer.<\/p>\n
Powers, the younger brother of current Michigan freshman and junior Pan Pac champion Paul Powers, is a rising freestyle talent in his own right. He\u2019s best in short course yards, as evidenced by his 20.36 in the 50 free at last December\u2019s junior nationals representing Splash Aquatic Club. He\u2019s also posted a 45.66 in the 100-yard free this year for a lifetime best. Powers won the 50 free at this past season\u2019s Georgia 1A-5A high school championships with a 20.59.<\/p>\n
Powers also has potential in the 100 breaststroke. He was third at the Georgia high school state meet in February with a lifetime best 57.11 but improved on that with a 56.35 a month later.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was a very challenging decision for me, but after spending the weekend with Coach Kredich and his staff, and seeing the direction, intensity and focus of their men\u2019s program, I knew this is where I needed to be in order to develop to the next level as a swimmer and to achieve my personal goals both in and out of the pool,\u201d Powers said. \u201cThe team spirit at Tennessee was awesome! They felt like family. They also share my same values and discipline, while having a lot of fun at the same time.
