SHANGHAI, China, March 30. THE next major international competition is one week away. Scheduled for Shanghai, China, the World Short Course Championships will run from April 5-9 at the Qizhong Stadium. The United States men will be coached by Eric Hansen (University of Wisconsin) while the U.S. women will be guided by Mike DeBoor (Lakeside Aquatics).<\/p>\n
Coming off an NCAA Championships that featured American-record swims in the 100 and 200 backstrokes and the 200 individual medley for the University of Florida, Ryan Lochte headlines the male contingent. He\u2019ll be supported by Northwestern\u2019s Matt Grevers, who repeated as NCAA champ in the 100 backstroke, and North Carolina State\u2019s Cullen Jones, the NCAA titlist in the 50 free.<\/p>\n
For the women, Kate Ziegler and Kaitlin Sandeno are the leaders of the United States squad. Ziegler is the reigning long-course world champ in the 800 and 1,500 freestyles while Sandeno is the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the 400 individual medley. At the Athens Olympics and World Champs in Montreal, Sandeno also helped the U.S. to gold in the 800 freestyle relay. Other prime-time performers for the U.S. are breaststrokers Tara Kirk and Jessica Hardy and Mary DeScenza, who just won her fourth straight NCAA crown in the 200 butterfly while representing Georgia.<\/p>\n
