THE first three heats of the 1650 were swum this afternoon, between 4 and 5:00 with only the championship final – the top eight seeded swimmers – swum in the evening.

The fastest time out of the first three heats was turned in by ASU’s Gal Nevo, a freshman from Israel, who clocked 14:55.54. There were three other sub-15 minute swims: ASU’s Lucas Azevedo, 14:57.40; Indiana’s Sergiy Fesenko, 14:58.02; and Cal’s Dan Lysaught, 14:58.96.

Auburn’s Anthony Fleming stood in ninth, giving him a possibility of scoring a few points, while Arizona’s Tyler DeBerry was fifteenth, which will not score.

The championship heat featured a stirring battle between Georgia’s Sebastien Roualt and Michigan’s Peter Vanderkaay. Roualt took the lead and quickly built a two-second advantage over Vanderkaay and Olympic silver medalist Larsen Jensen of USC. The Frenchman set a torrid pace swimming the first 600 yards under the record pace of Michigan’s Chris Thompson.

Gradually Jensen faded behind as Vanderkaay started to chip away at Roualt’s lead. By 1200 yards, it was down to 1.66 seconds and it appeared that Vanderkaay would reel Roualt in.

But after the 1200 turn it was Roualt who picked up the pace, extending his lead with every stroke. By 1350 yards it was back at two seconds, and by the 1500 yard mark it was 4.01 seconds.

Maintaining a six-beat kick throughout the 66-lap race, Roualt sprinted to the wall to touch in 14:29.43, the third fastest time ever. Vanderkaay was second in 14:33.75 while Jensen was third in 14:44.89. Nevo’s time from the afternoon heats placed him sixth overall.

In all, eleven men bettered 15 minutes.

NCAA Division I Champ.
