ARIZONA was seeded first, Auburn ninth, which meant they’d be in different heats. So Auburn’s task was to win Heat 2 with as fast a time as possible. If the Tigers finished fourth or higher overall, they’d have the lead; any lower and Arizona (assuming the Cats won Heat 3) would end Day 2 in first.

For Arizona, the task was simple: Win.

Auburn won the second heat in 6:21.90, setting the stage for the final heat.

Arizona led off with the Big Gun, Simon Burnett, who looked tired but still swam the fastest leadoff split, 3:33.41 – a tenth of a second ahead of Florida’s Ryan Lochte. The Cats followed with Lyndon Ferns (1:34.05), Tyler DeBerry (1:34.84) and Adam Ritter (1:34.37), who just barely held off a late Michigan charge.

Arizona’s 6:16.67 just missed the NCAA mark of 6:16.25, while Michigan touched in 6:18.11. Texas was third (6:19.61), Florida was fourth (6:21.69) and Stanford was fifth (6:21.71), bumping Auburn to sixth.

At the end of Day Two, Arizona had a five point lead, 336.5 to Auburn’s 331.5. Stanford was third in 2:24.5, with a young but determined Texas team fourth in 220.

Event 14 Men 800 Yard Freestyle Relay<br
