MICHIGAN’s Peter Vanderkaay was on a mission. He was aiming to break the Michigan school record in the 500 free. Of course, the school record – Tom Dolan’s 4:08.75 from 1995 – was also the American record, and for 11 long years it had remained inviolable.

Not any more!

Vanderkaay swam a beautiful race, trailing Dolan’s record pace by 67-hundredths at the 100, 47.74 to Dolan’s 47.07. By the 200, Vanderkaay was creeping up on Dolan’s pace, 1:37.72 to 1:37.52, and he had opened up a full two-second advantage on the field.

At the 300, he trailed Dolan by only 12-hundredths and had opened up an immense gap between himself and a stellar field that included three of the seven fastest men of all time.

At 350 yards Vanderkaay had caught up to Dolan’s pace and at 400 he was 39-hundredths ahead, 3:18.54 to 3:18.93. With the crowd cheering him on, Vanderkaay brought it home in 50.06 to touch in 4:08.60.

A new Michigan school record! And, oh yeah, an American record too – 15 hundredths of a second quicker than Dolan’s venerable mark.

USC’s Ous Mellouli was a distant second in 4:12.92, two-hundredths ahead of Georgia’s Sebastien Rouault, with USC’s Larsen Jensen fourth in 4:13.90.

Event 2 Men 500 Yard Freestyle
=======================================================================
NCAA: N 4:08.75 1995 Tom Dolan, Michigan
American: A 4:08.75 1995 Tom Dolan, Michigan
US Open: O 4:08.75 1995 Tom Dolan, Michigan
GTAC Pool: P 4:13.49 3/23/2006 Peter Vanderkaay, MICHIGAN
Name Year School Prelims Finals Points
=======================================================================                          === Championship ===

  1 Vanderkaay, Peter SR Michigan 4:13.49 4:08.60N 20
22.85 47.74 (24.89)
1:12.65 (24.91) 1:37.72 (25.07)
2:02.85 (25.13) 2:27.81 (24.96)
2:52.99 (25.18) 3:18.54 (25.55)
3:43.74 (25.20) 4:08.60 (24.86)
2 Mellouli, Ous SR Southern Cal. 4:17.04 4:12.92P 17
23.21 48.26 (25.05)
1:13.79 (25.53) 1:39.63 (25.84)
2:05.37 (25.74) 2:31.46 (26.09)
2:57.24 (25.78) 3:23.16 (25.92)
3:48.60 (25.44) 4:12.92 (24.32)
3 Rouault, Sebastien SO Georgia 4:14.71 4:12.94P 16
23.28 48.39 (25.11)
1:13.73 (25.34) 1:39.40 (25.67)
2:05.39 (25.99) 2:31.18 (25.79)
2:56.85 (25.67) 3:22.45 (25.60)
3:47.85 (25.40) 4:12.94 (25.09)
4 Jensen, Larsen JR Southern Cal. 4:14.57 4:13.90 15
23.74 49.15 (25.41)
1:14.78 (25.63) 1:40.37 (25.59)
2:06.19 (25.82) 2:32.20 (26.01)
2:58.06 (25.86) 3:23.81 (25.75)
3:49.17 (25.36) 4:13.90 (24.73)
5 Klueh, Michael FR Texas 4:16.11 4:14.10 14
23.62 48.89 (25.27)
1:14.41 (25.52) 1:40.15 (25.74)
2:05.98 (25.83) 2:32.15 (26.17)
2:58.41 (26.26) 3:24.41 (26.00)
3:49.94 (25.53) 4:14.10 (24.16)
6 Phillips, Shaun JR Stanford 4:17.08 4:14.20 13
23.94 49.60 (25.66)
1:15.37 (25.77) 1:41.28 (25.91)
2:06.87 (25.59) 2:32.58 (25.71)
2:58.34 (25.76) 3:24.12 (25.78)
3:49.61 (25.49) 4:14.20 (24.59)
7 Vanderkaay, Alex SO Michigan 4:17.33 4:17.88 12
23.97 49.45 (25.48)
1:15.31 (25.86) 1:41.22 (25.91)
2:07.45 (26.23) 2:33.64 (26.19)
2:59.83 (26.19) 3:26.00 (26.17)
3:52.24 (26.24) 4:17.88 (25.64)
8 Meichtry, Dominik SO Cal.
