SAINT \u00a0LOUIS, Missouri, September 28. Saint Louis University kicked off its season with a pair of wins against the Washington University Bears this weekend. \u00a0The women won 131-112, while the men picked up a 138-99 victory.<\/p>\n
Saint Louis Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams captured wins over Washington University to open the 2014-15 season. The women defeated the Bears 131-112 while the men won 138-99.<\/p>\n For the men, Brendan Hulseman won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.80) and 100-yard butterfly (50.97). Zack Billingsley won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.28. Austin Nguyenphu also won an event, touching the wall at 1:55.52 in the 200-yard IM. Freshman Ryan McCoy won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.72. Shane Cano was the last Billiken to win a swimming event, turning in a time of 53.38 in the 100-yard backstroke. The men also won both of the diving events with freshman Shawn Cole winning the one-meter (194.30) and Nick Livasy winning the three-meter (176.80).<\/p>\n For the women, Maggie Sheean won the first event for the Billikens, touching at 24.87 in the 50-yard freestyle. Morgan Peterson won the 200-yard IM (2:09.08) and 100-yard butterfly (58.13) while finishing second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.08). Melanie Battaglia finished ahead of Peterson in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.76. Abbey King won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:12.76. Courtney Lagastee won both diving events for the women with scores of 223.30 in the one-meter and 217.95 in the three-meter.<\/p>\n Next up for the Billikens is the Butler Invitational on Sept. 28. Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).<\/p>\n Washington Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams combined to win nine events, but dropped their season-opening duals against NCAA Division I Saint Louis University Friday evening at Millstone Pool.<\/p>\n The Washington U. women won five events and scored 112 points, while SLU scored 131. The Billikens also won the men’s dual, defeating the Bears 138-99.<\/p>\n Junior Kristalyn McAfee was part of three first-place finishes for the Washington U. women. She took first in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.22, while senior Sara Taege was third in 1:59.32. McAfee added a first-place finish in the 100 free in 54.05, and sophomore MariMac Collins completed the 1-2 finish for the Bears by clocking a time of 55.11 to place second. McAfee, Collins and Taege also teamed up with freshman Fiona Hon to win the 200-free relay with a time of 1:39.48.<\/p>\n Junior Kaisen Yao, sophomore Michael Lagieski, junior Reed Dalton and sophomore Justin Morrell led off the meet for the Washington U. men by winning the 200-medley relay in a time of 1:33.88. Lagieski also led a first- through third-place sweep for the Washington U. men in the 100 breaststroke. He clocked a time of 58.10 to finish first, while sophomores Reese Frerichs (58.75) and Matt Liu (59.74) followed in second and third, respectively. Liu (1:58.64) and Lagieski (1:58.81) also finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 individual medley.<\/p>\n Freshman Nicole Zanolli was the first event-winner of the night for the Washington U. women, taking first in the 1,000 free in a time of 10:40.46. She also clocked a time of 5:14.40 to finish as the runner-up in the 500 free. Freshman Niamh O’Grady was the other event-winner for the WUSTL women, swimming to first in the 100 backstroke in 59.32.<\/p>\n Senior Zane Turpin and sophomore Andrew Ellison accounted for Washington U.’s other two first-place finishes in the meet. Turpin won the men’s 1,000 free in 9:56.59, with Ellison following in second in 9:58.62. The two swimmers flipped finishes in the 500 free later in the meet, with Ellison winning in 4:48.51 and Turpin taking second in 4:49.34.<\/p>\n The Washington University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams return to action Friday, Oct. 3, at the Show-Me Showdown hosted by the University of Missouri. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.<\/p>\n
