The battle for state supremacy in 2014 has concluded with Queensland taking its sixth straight title at the State Teams Age Short Course Championships at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p>With a total of 2,108 points Queensland took the lead early and couldn\u2019t be caught despite a desperate chase from second placed New South Wales on 1,756 and Victoria on 1,529.5.<\/p>\n<p>After winning 8 of the 11 relays on offer, the depth in the Queensland team played a major role in securing their victory this year.\u00a0 At the end of the final event, Queensland took out a number of individual and team awards including: the boy\u2019s 16\/17 years swimmer of the meet through\u00a0<strong>Samuel Young<\/strong>, the girl\u2019s 13\/14 and 15\/16 years swimmers of the meet through\u00a0<strong>Minna Atherton<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Alanna Bowles<\/strong>\u00a0as well as the champion male and the champion female team overall.<\/p>\n<p>New South Wales were also strong this year, stealing points in a number of events previously dominated by other states.<\/p>\n<p>One of the New South Wales swimmers stealing the spotlight was 15-year-old\u00a0<strong>Matthew Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0who collected the male swimmer of the meet for the 14\/15 years age group for his efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>started this morning\u2019s session with a new meet record in the boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 50m breaststroke, hitting the wall in a time of 28.28 for the win. Queensland swimmer\u00a0<strong>Zac<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Stubblety-Cook<\/strong>\u00a0came into the wall for second in 29.56 with Victorian\u00a0<strong>David Schlicht<\/strong>\u00a0third in 29.94.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson then backed up in the boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 400m individual medley to set yet another record and take the win in a time of 4:25.35. Tasmanian\u00a0<strong>Jacob Vincent<\/strong>\u00a0was second in 4:30.29 with Queensland swimmer\u00a0<strong>Samuel Wendt<\/strong>\u00a0third in 4:32.52.<\/p>\n<p>To top off an excellent morning in the pool Wilson then took out the boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 100m breaststroke less than an hour after the 400m IM setting another meet record with his time of 1:01.63. Stubblety-Cook was again relegated to second place in 1:02.25 with\u00a0<strong>Health Macleod<\/strong>\u00a0third in 1:04.22.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson picked up an incredible seven individual titles and five meet records over the weekend and will leave as one to watch for the future.<\/p>\n<p>Four more meet records were set on the final morning of competition starting with triple Australian Age Champion and Junior Pan Pacific Championship representative\u00a0<strong>Shayna Jack.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jack (1:57.08) took the title and set a new meet record in the girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 200m freestyle when she turned up the speed in the final lap to take the win ahead of teammate\u00a0<strong>Alanna Bowles<\/strong>\u00a0(1:58.59) and Victorian\u00a0<strong>Lushavel Stickland<\/strong>\u00a0in 2:01.31.<\/p>\n<p>Then Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championship debutant\u00a0<strong>Alanna Bowles<\/strong>\u00a0continued Queensland\u2019s run of success picking up another title and another meet record, this time in the girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 200m butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>Bowles knocked over a second off the previous record, which she also held, to successfully defend her title from 2013 in a time of 2:10.34. Bowles\u2019 teammate\u00a0<strong>Lucia Lassman<\/strong>\u00a0had to settle for second place in 2:13.26 while\u00a0<strong>Tamsin Cook<\/strong>from Western Australia was third in 2:13.37.<\/p>\n<p>South Australian\u00a0<strong>Ella Bond<\/strong>\u00a0had also had a speedy start to the session when she stopped the clock in a time of 31.34 in the girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 50m breaststroke. Bond eclipsed the previous record of 31.53 set in 2011 by Jessica Hansen to take the win ahead of\u00a0<strong>Mikayla Smith<\/strong>\u00a0(32.33) from Victoria and\u00a0<strong>Rachel Gower<\/strong>\u00a0(32.76) from Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The records continued to fall when West Australian<strong>\u00a0Braga Verhage\u00a0<\/strong>took out the boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 50m breaststroke in a time of 28.24. Verhage just edged out\u00a0<strong>Jayke Small<\/strong>\u00a0(28.35) from New South Wales with Queenslander\u00a0<strong>Grayson Bell<\/strong>\u00a0(28.43) rounding out the top three.<\/p>\n<p>After setting a record in the 50m breaststroke, Verhage was back on top again in the boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 100m breaststroke, touching in a time of 1:02.43 for the win. West Australian\u00a0<strong>Alex Milligan<\/strong>\u00a0was just a touch off first place in 1:02.45 while\u00a0<strong>Joshua Simat<\/strong>\u00a0was third in 1:02.85.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other events\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 50m Breaststroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 50m breaststroke Queensland\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Chelsea Hodges<\/strong>\u00a0(33.21) stole the win from New South Wales swimmer\u00a0<strong>Brooke Peterson\u00a0<\/strong>(33.23) with just 0.02 separating the two. Hodges\u2019 teammate\u00a0<strong>Megan Bogatie<\/strong>\u00a0was third with a time of 33.67.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 200m Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New South Wales added another win to their tally this morning when\u00a0<strong>Rachael Robinson<\/strong>\u00a0finished first in the girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 200m butterfly. Robinson clocked a 2:19.15 touching ahead of Queenslanders\u00a0<strong>Gemma Cooney<\/strong>\u00a0in 2:21.12 and\u00a0<strong>Emma Siddle<\/strong>\u00a0in 2:21.97.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 200m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 200m freestyle it was Queenslander\u00a0<strong>Daniel Jacobson<\/strong>\u00a0who picked up the points for his team, taking the win in 1:51.88. Second place went to Tasmanian\u00a0<strong>Jacob Vincent<\/strong>\u00a0in 1:52.38 with\u00a0<strong>Callum Lowe-Griffiths<\/strong>(1:54.05) third.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 200m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Australian Age champion in this event<strong>\u00a0Samuel Young\u00a0<\/strong>asserted his dominance in the boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 200m freestyle, hitting the wall almost two seconds clear of his closest competitor in a time of 1:47.69. Young was too quick for<strong>Damian Fyfe<\/strong>\u00a0who took second spot in 1:49.66 and\u00a0<strong>Ryan Leonard<\/strong>\u00a0who was third in 1:50.32.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 200m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Queensland took a clean sweep in the girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 200m freestyle with\u00a0<strong>Minna Atherton<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mikayla Messer<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Krily Siebenhausen<\/strong>\u00a0taking the top three spots and all the points on offer for the event. Atherton was the fastest of the three, hitting the wall in 2:02.23 followed by Messer in 2:03.04 and Siebenhausen in 2:03.26.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 400m Individual Medley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New South Wales took the bragging rights in the boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 400m individual medley with teammates\u00a0<strong>Hayden Hinds-Sydenham<\/strong>\u00a0(4:23.30) and\u00a0<strong>Ryan Leonard<\/strong>\u00a0(4:23.56) finishing first and second respectively. West Australian<strong>Austin McAleese<\/strong>\u00a0was third with his time of 4:24.70.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 100m Breaststroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Australian<strong>\u00a0Ella Bond\u00a0<\/strong>backed up after her speedy start this morning to add another win to her tally, this time in the girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 100m breaststroke. Bond clocked a 1:08.65 to finish ahead of\u00a0<strong>Mikayla Smith<\/strong>\u00a0in 1:10.63 and<strong>Calypso Sheridan<\/strong>\u00a0in 1:11.52.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 100m Breaststroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Queenslander\u00a0<strong>Sarah Beale<\/strong>\u00a0stepped up to take first place in the girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 100m breaststroke hitting the wall in 1:11.65, getting the better of\u00a0<strong>Brooke Peterson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Chelsea Hodges<\/strong>\u00a0who dead-heated for second place in 1:13.30.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 1500m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 1500m freestyle went to West Australian\u00a0<strong>Brody McGowan<\/strong>\u00a0who finished the 60 laps in a time of 15:40.58. Second place went to fellow West Australian\u00a0<strong>Nicholas De Bomford<\/strong>\u00a0in 15:46.79 while\u00a0<strong>Reece Brennan<\/strong>from Queensland was third.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mixed 8x50m Freestyle Relay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The final event of the State Teams Age Short Course Championships was not short on entertainment value as the swimmers in the mixed 8x50m freestyle relay put on a show.\u00a0 The final lap left\u00a0<strong>Victoria<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Queensland<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>New South Wales<\/strong>\u00a0to fight for first place, going stroke for stroke to the wall. Victoria had the best touch on the wall, recording a time of 3:15.16 for the win.
