The first session of the 2014 State Teams Age Short Course Championships saw four meet records fall to three different states as the battle for bragging rights kicked off at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p>Tasmania\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Jacob Vincent<\/strong>\u00a0was the first to set a new State Teams standard when he hit the wall in a time of 3:53.29 in the boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 400m freestyle, knocking over two seconds off the previous record from 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Vincent, who also holds the 15 years Australian Age title in the event, was too strong for the New South Wales duo of\u00a0<strong>Nathan Robinson<\/strong>\u00a0(3:58.70) and\u00a0<strong>Callum Lowe-Griffiths<\/strong>\u00a0(4:00.09) who finished second and third respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In the corresponding girl\u2019s event Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships debutant\u00a0<strong>Alanna Bowles<\/strong>\u00a0asserted her dominance, finishing over three seconds clear of her closest competitor in the girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 400m freestyle with a time of 4:05.98.<\/p>\n<p>West Australian\u00a0<strong>Tamsin Cook<\/strong>\u00a0picked up the points for second place clocking 4:09.51 while Queenslander\u00a0<strong>Phoebe Hines<\/strong>\u00a0was third in 4:15.12.<\/p>\n<p>The boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 50m butterfly saw Queensland\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Dominic Richardson<\/strong>\u00a0and West Australia\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Braga Verhage<\/strong>\u00a0in a tight tussle for the title with Richardson taking the win and setting a new meet record by the smallest of margins. Richardson stopped the clock in 23.71 with Verhage a fingernail behind in 23.72. New South Wales Swimmer\u00a0<strong>Vincent Dai<\/strong>\u00a0was third in 25.08.<\/p>\n<p>The final record for the session came in the boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 200m individual medley with New South Wales swimmer\u00a0<strong>Matthew Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0successfully defending his title in a meet record time of 2:01.45. Queensland\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Rory Scott<\/strong>(2:06.95) was second with\u00a0<strong>Liam Brodrick<\/strong>\u00a0rounding out the top three in 2:07.00.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other events\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 50m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was the girl\u2019s and boy\u2019s splash and dash 50m freestyle events that kicked off proceedings at the 2014 State Teams Age Short Course Championships in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria picked up the first points on offer when\u00a0<strong>Julia Hawkins<\/strong>\u00a0recorded a 25.49 to take first place in the girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 50m freestyle. Second place went to Junior Pan Pacs representative\u00a0<strong>Minna Atherton\u00a0<\/strong>in 25.97 with New South Wales swimmer\u00a0<strong>Natasha Ramsden<\/strong>\u00a0third in 26.18.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 50m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New South Wales were next on the leader board when\u00a0<strong>William Yang\u00a0<\/strong>(23.05) picked up the win in the boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 50m freestyle ahead of\u00a0<strong>Andrew Ryan<\/strong>\u00a0from Queensland in 23.83 and fellow new South Welshman\u00a0<strong>Christopher Hoare<\/strong>\u00a0in 23.92.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 50m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Junior Pan Pacs medallist\u00a0<strong>Shayna Jack<\/strong>\u00a0was too strong in the girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 50m freestyle, hitting the wall first in a time of 25.25. Victorian\u00a0<strong>Elyse Woods<\/strong>\u00a0was second in 25.63 with West Australian\u00a0<strong>Hadley Lindsay<\/strong>\u00a0third in 25.77.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 50m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Braga Verhage<\/strong>\u00a0opened his State Teams campaign with a win in the boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 50m freestyle, clocking a 22.43 to get the better of\u00a0<strong>Brayden McCarthy<\/strong>\u00a0(22.56) and\u00a0<strong>Vincent Dai<\/strong>\u00a0(22.62)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 400m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 400m freestyle saw the Australian Age champion in the event\u00a0<strong>Mikayla Messer<\/strong>\u00a0prove too fast for the rest of the field as she took top spot in a time of 4:17.42. Messer finished over three seconds ahead of Tasmania\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Ariane Titmus<\/strong>\u00a0in 4:20.73 and\u00a0<strong>Bethany Mounfield<\/strong>\u00a0from South Australia in 4:20.90.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 400m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Queensland swimmers\u00a0<strong>Reece Brennan<\/strong>\u00a0(3:51.53) and\u00a0<strong>Max Carleton<\/strong>\u00a0(3:56.90) took the top two spots in the boy\u2019s 16\/17 years 400m freestyle with\u00a0<strong>Brody McGowan<\/strong>\u00a0from Western Australia taking third place in 3:56.93.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 50m Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 50m butterfly saw\u00a0<strong>Gemma Cooney<\/strong>\u00a0from Queensland hit the wall first in a time of 27.99. Cooney\u2019s teammate\u00a0<strong>Imogen Watson<\/strong>\u00a0was second in 28.28 and New South Wales swimmer\u00a0<strong>Courtney Taylor<\/strong>\u00a0was third in 28.63.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 50m Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four-time Australian Age Champion from 2014\u00a0<strong>Matthew Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0collected his first points for New South Wales in the boy\u2019s 14\/15 years 50m butterfly, hitting the wall first in 24.99, while Queensland teammates\u00a0<strong>Cameron Usher<\/strong>(25.94) and\u00a0<strong>Bryan Poon<\/strong>\u00a0(26.02) finished second and third respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 50m Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The girl\u2019s 15\/16 years 50m butterfly was a fight to the finish with Queensland\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Lucia Lassman<\/strong>\u00a0(26.79) just edging out Victoria\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Stephanie Whan<\/strong>\u00a0(26.94) and\u00a0<strong>Mikaela Cornelissen<\/strong>\u00a0(26.96) for first place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 200m IM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the girl\u2019s 13\/14 years 200m individual medley, rising star\u00a0<strong>Minna Atherton<\/strong>\u00a0upgraded to gold from her silver winning swim earlier in the evening, touching in a time of 2:17.52. Queensland\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Megan Bogatie<\/strong>\u00a0was second in 2:19.70 and<strong>Sienna McDonald<\/strong>\u00a0third in 2:20.74.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girl\u2019s 16 and under 4x200m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Queensland quartet of\u00a0<strong>Shayna Jack<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kayla Hoey<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sarah Johnson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Alanna Bowles<\/strong>\u00a0put on a dominant display in the girl\u2019s 16 and under 4x200m freestyle relay, hitting the wall in 8:01.23, almost seven seconds clear of their closest competitor.<\/p>\n<p>Victorians\u00a0<strong>Jessica Adams<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Elli Warren<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Elyse Woods<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Lushavel Stickland<\/strong>\u00a0were second in 8:08.07 while the New South Wales team of\u00a0<strong>Rachel Wood, Vivian Zhu, Chloe Yoo\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Monique Rae<\/strong>\u00a0were third in 8:14.74.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s 17 and under 4x200m Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the boy\u2019s 17 and under 4x200m freestyle relay, Queensland once again took the win, with the team of\u00a0<strong>Dominic Richardson,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Samuel Young, Reece Brennan\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Max Carleton<\/strong>\u00a0clocking a 7:18.94 to finish first over six seconds clear.<\/p>\n<p>Second place went to New South Wales swimmers\u00a0<strong>Cameron Slaughter, Ryan Leonard, Hayden Hinds-Sydenham\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Caleb Hansford<\/strong>\u00a0in 7:25.09 with Victoria\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Mitchell Davenport-Wright, Theo Benehoustsos, Caiden Gill\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Ryan Pinchbeck<\/strong>\u00a0third in 7:30.63.<\/p>\n<p>The second session of the 2014 State Teams Age Short Course in Canberra will begin at\u00a0<span data-term=\"goog_455129151\">9:30am tomorrow<\/span>\u00a0morning with live results available here\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/liveresults.swimming.org.au\/sal\/2014ST\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/liveresults.swimming.org.au\/sal\/2014ST\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The above article is a press release submitted to Swimming World.
