IN what is \u2013 perhaps \u2013 the least shocking development in the sport in years, Kenyon College took the opening-day lead at the NCAA Division III Men\u2019s Championships on Thursday night. Racing at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, Kenyon rolled up 158 points, putting it well ahead of Denison (116) and Emory (86). Kenyon is chasing its 27th straight crown.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyon got off to a strong start as its 200 freestyle relay of Andrejs Duda, Josh Mitchell, Jim Berger and Marc Christian clocked 1:21.68. Duda later led a one-two sweep in the 200 individual medley as he checked in with a mark of 1:48.64, ahead of teammate Travis Brennion (1:52.19). Ethan Treat of Amherst placed third in 1:52.70. Kenyon also prevailed in the 400 medley relay as Duda, Davis Zarins, Matt Harris and Berger hit the wall in 3:19.66, ahead of the 3:20.77 of Johns Hopkins.<\/p>\n<p>In other action, Emory\u2019s Tim Newtown was the victor in the 500 freestyle, thanks to a swim of 4:26.00. The effort supplied a narrow triumph over Denison\u2019s Bryce Peterson, who checked in at 4:26.15. Meanwhile, Washington University\u2019s duo of Mike Salvik and Eric Triebe went one-two in the 50 free with times of 20.46 and 20.60, respectively.
