SENIOR\u00a0diver Kevin Bain (Northville, Mich.\/Northville) and former swimmer David Moore (Holland, Mich; 2011-14) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been named as two of the University of Michigan’s nominees for the 2015-16 Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships. Both are nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship, while Moore has also been nominated for the Marshall Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Bain and Moore are the only two nominees from Michigan Athletics and are among a pool of six total candidates at the university. If chosen for the Rhodes Scholarship, the recipients will spend two years studying at the University of Oxford in England, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. The Rhodes Scholarship is arguably the highest honor in all of academia, providing its students with once-in-a-lifetime educational experiences in order to shape the leaders of tomorrow.<\/p>\n

The selection process is long. Interested applicants (typically students with grade point averages of 3.8 or higher) start by applying at the university level. The applications are reviewed by a faculty council that decides who to interview based on the student’s essays and letters of recommendation. Following the interviews, the strongest applicants are selected as U-M nominees and receive official endorsement from the provost. Nominations are then sent to scholarship selection committees in Chicago. Should Bain and Moore be chosen for interviews at the regional level, they’ll be competing with nominees from the states of Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and West Virginia. Thirty-two scholarship recipients are chosen from 16 different regions across the nation.<\/p>\n

Bain is pursuing two undergraduate degrees, a B.A. in comparative literature and a B.B.A in international business. He is one of five seniors on this year’s squad. Moore graduated last spring with a degree in mechanical engineering and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in the field.<\/p>\n
