LONDON, England, September 19. THE result of today\u2019s vote to keep Scotland as a part of the United Kingdom was felt across all areas of sport, particularly concerning the way Scotland would be represented in international competition.<\/p>\n

With a 55 percent vote against independence, the status quo continues as athletes prepare for the Rio Olympic Games in less than two years. Had Scottish residents voted for independence, it could have immediately affected which flag Scottish athletes would be able to wrap around them on Olympic and world championship podiums.<\/p>\n

Luckily for British Swimming \u2013 the umbrella organization overseeing athletes who claim Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland as their home countries but represent Great Britain internationally \u2013 no action will be needed moving forward.<\/p>\n

Below is a statement from British Swimming regarding today\u2019s vote:<\/p>\n

British Swimming is delighted that there is now clarity following the outcome of the Scottish referendum as the sport continues to work towards success in Rio and beyond.<\/p>\n

After an excellent summer of success from all of the aquatic disciplines at the Commonwealth Games, the LEN European Championships and the IPC European Championships, the sports look forward to competing again under the British banner at the IPC World Championships in Glasgow and the FINA World Championships in Kazan.<\/p>\n

British Swimming will continue to work with Scotland and all Scottish agencies to ensure the sports have the best possible preparation for the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics in Rio.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Scotland\u2019s athletes are among the cream of the crop in British Swimming. Hannah Miley and Dan Wallace won the 400 individual medley at the Commonwealth Games, while Commonwealth champion Ross Murdoch and Olympic silver medalist Michael Jamieson are Great Britain\u2019s two best swimmers in the 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
