MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 12. THE Emory University women wrapped up the NCAA Division III Women\u2019s championship on Saturday night as they rolled up 428 points to outdistance Kenyon (418) and Williams (293). The competition, which saw 53 teams figure into the scoring, was held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. <\/p>\n
Emory received a major jolt in the 1,650 freestyle as Sam White and Holly Hinz registered a one-two finish. White covered the distance in 16:56.71 while Hinz was clocked in 16:59.70. Kate Gunning (ninth) and Suzanna Zifkin (13th) also scored in the 1,650 free for Emory.<\/p>\n
Amherst, which placed fourth in the team standings, received a Division III record from Brittany Sasser in the 200 backstroke. Sasser hit the wall in 1:59.87 to break her own record of 1:59.92, established last month. Another record was corralled by Whitworth\u2019s Samantha Kephart in the 200 fly (2:00.15). Her former standard was a 2:01.45. Meanwhile, Calvin\u2019s Becky Weima won her third freestyle race as she claimed first in the 100 distance with a mark of 51.03.<\/p>\n
Breaststroke sensation Lindsay Payne (Williams) notched an easy triumph in the 200 breast, thanks to a swim of 2:14.20. Payne, who won her final race by nearly four seconds, had already prevailed in the 100 breast and 200 individual medley.
