BRIDGEPORT, Pennsylvania, September 18.\u00a0STANFORD\u00a0<\/strong>University,\u00a0Whittier College\u00a0and\u00a0Princeton University\u00a0maintain their Preseason and Week 1 No. 1 rankings as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2014 Men’s Varsity Week 2\/September 17 National Top 20, Division III Top 10 and CWPA Top 10 Polls.<\/p>\n

In the National Top 20 rankings, the Cardinal of Stanford retains its position as the No. 1 team in the nation as the team picks up 97 points to edge out the University of California-Los Angeles (95 points) and the University of Southern California (93 points) to retain its position on top of the National stage.<\/p>\n

In the Division III ranks, Whittier remains a unanimous pick for the top position as the Poets picked up 100 points and expanded its lead to a titanic 13-points over\u00a0Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges<\/strong>\u00a0(87 points) and\u00a0Johns Hopkins University<\/strong>\u00a0(87 points).<\/p>\n

Similar to the National Top 20 and Division III Top 10 poll, the Preseason and Week 1 favorite in the CWPA Top 10 continues to dominate after two weekends of competition as Princeton retains its position as the unanimous top selection in the league poll.<\/p>\n

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.<\/p>\n

2014 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 2)
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Stanford University<\/strong>, which ranked at No 1 in the Preseason and Week 1\/September 10 National Top 20 Polls, retains its top position on the National stage by a narrowing margin as the Cardinal pick up 97 weeks in Week 2\/September 17 voting to edge out the\u00a0University of California-Los Angeles<\/strong>\u00a0(95 points) and the\u00a0University of Southern California<\/strong>\u00a0(93 points).<\/p>\n

The Cardinal, which finished third in the final 2014 Poll and garnered the No. 1 position for the first time in the Preseason Poll of August 27, leads a Top 10 which saw no movements among the Top Seven and a radical shift in the final three positions in the upper echelon of the rankings.<\/p>\n

Behind the Cardinal (Stanford), Bruins (UCLA) and Trojans (USC), the\u00a0University of California<\/strong>\u00a0(86 points),\u00a0Long Beach State University<\/strong>\u00a0(80 points), the\u00a0University of the Pacific<\/strong>\u00a0(74 points) and the\u00a0University of California-Santa Barbara<\/strong>\u00a0(70 points) hold firm at No. 4-to-7, respectively.<\/p>\n

However, the final three spots in the Top 10 all exchange hands in the wake of\u00a0Princeton University<\/strong>\u00a0upsetting former No. 8\u00a0University of California-Irvine<\/strong>\u00a0at the\u00a0Brown University<\/strong>\u00a0Bruno Fall Classic over the weekend in Providence, R.I.<\/p>\n

Due to the victory\/loss, the\u00a0University of California-San Diego<\/strong>\u00a0(62 points) and Princeton (62 points) rise to stand in a deadheat for the No. 8 position, while UC-Irvine (55 points) drops back to No. 10.<\/p>\n

Irvine’s two-place descent drives former No. 10 the\u00a0University of California-Davis<\/strong>\u00a0(52 points) out of the Top 10 and back to No. 11.<\/p>\n

Unlike the Top 10 in which seven teams held onto their positions from the Week 1 voting, the final 10 spots in the Top 20 all experienced changes.<\/p>\n

Loyola Marymount University<\/strong>\u00a0(45 points) leapfrogs\u00a0Pepperdine University<\/strong>\u00a0(36 points) to take over at No. 12, while\u00a0Santa Clara University<\/strong>\u00a0(28 points) and\u00a0Harvard University<\/strong>\u00a0(28 points) glide from No. 16 and 18(T), respectively, seven days ago to share the No 14 slot.<\/p>\n

For the second week in a row the Bears of\u00a0Brown University<\/strong>\u00a0(21 points) and the Midshipmen of the\u00a0United States Naval Academy<\/strong>\u00a0(21 points) stand shoulder-to-shoulder as the teams, which were tied at No. 14 last week, fall two positions to rate as equals at No. 16 on September 17.<\/p>\n

George Washington University<\/strong>\u00a0(14 points) reverses the pattern of Brown and Navy by ascending two spots to No. 18, with the\u00a0United States Air Force Academy<\/strong>\u00a0(9 points) breaking free to stand alone at No. 19.\u00a0Whittier College<\/strong>\u00a0(8 points) and\u00a0Concordia University<\/strong>\u00a0(8 points) complete the Top 20 by sharing the final berth.<\/p>\n

St. Francis College Brooklyn<\/strong>\u00a0(5 points),\u00a0California Baptist University<\/strong>\u00a0(4 points),\u00a0Bucknell University<\/strong>\u00a0(1 point) and\u00a0Fordham University<\/strong>\u00a0(1 point) also received votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

2014 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 2)
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"\u00a0<\/strong>The Poets of\u00a0Whittier College<\/strong>\u00a0(100 points), which are now ranked at No. 20 in the National Top 20 Poll, rate 19 spots better among small college institutions as the squad is the unanimous top choice for the second consecutive week in the Week 2\/September 17 National Division III Top 10 Poll.<\/p>\n

Whittier, which received all but one first place vote in the Preseason voting, pulls away from the rest of the field after two weeks of competition as the Poets hold a commanding 13 point lead in the Division III Top 10 Poll over the duo of formerly No. 3-ranked\u00a0Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges<\/strong>\u00a0(87 points) and former No. 5\u00a0Johns Hopkins University<\/strong>\u00a0(87 points).<\/p>\n

Unlike the National Top 20 Poll in which the first seven teams in rankings retained their positions, the Division III Top 10 has more change than a bag of nickels with no team other than Whittier standing in the same position as last week.<\/p>\n

Behind Whittier and newly crowned runner-ups Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Johns Hopkins, former No. 2\u00a0Chapman University<\/strong>\u00a0(84 points) drops two places to No. 4 and the\u00a0University of La Verne<\/strong>\u00a0(77 points) rises four spots to take over at No. 5 after ranking at No. 9 last week.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/strong>\u00a0(71 points) and\u00a0Pomona-Pitzer Colleges<\/strong>\u00a0(70 points) continue the trend by moving from No. 8 and 3 to No. 6 and 7, respectively.<\/p>\n

California Lutheran University<\/strong>\u00a0(65 points) and the\u00a0University of Redlands<\/strong>\u00a0(65 points) fall into a tie at No. 8, with the duo of\u00a0Washington & Jefferson College<\/strong>\u00a0(23 points) and\u00a0Connecticut College<\/strong>\u00a0(23 points) moving into the Top 10 by tying at No. 10.<\/p>\n

Occidental College<\/strong>\u00a0(22 points) also received votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It appears through two weeks of competition, no Collegiate Water Polo Associaiton (CWPA) league team can quite catch the\u00a0Princeton University<\/strong>\u00a0Tigers by the tail as the Black & Orange continue to rank as the unanimous top selection in the Week 2\/September 17 CWPA Top 10 polling.<\/p>\n

Princeton, which finished second to\u00a0St. Francis College Brooklyn<\/strong>\u00a0last season in the CWPA Championship title game and was ranked No. 1 in the wake of both the Preseason and Week 1 ballots, now holds an six-point lead over its closest pursuers as\u00a0Harvard University<\/strong>\u00a0(94 points) moves to No. 2 following a 13-9 victory over the\u00a0United States Naval Academy<\/strong>\u00a0at the\u00a0Brown University<\/strong>\u00a0Bruno Fall Classic.<\/p>\n

Navy stays at No. 3 as the Midshipmen defeated the host Bears of Brown (10-9 W OT SD), but stand equal with the ursine squad as Navy and Brown both pick up 88 points to tie at No. 3.<\/p>\n

George Washington University<\/strong>\u00a0(78 points) hangs on at No. 5 for another week, while the remainder of the Top 10 saw a massive shakeup with the final five positions in the ranking all exchanging hands.<\/p>\n

Fordham University<\/strong>\u00a0(70 points) and\u00a0St. Francis College Brooklyn<\/strong>\u00a0(70 points) are tied at No. 6, with the duo of\u00a0Johns Hopkins University<\/strong>\u00a0(67 points) and\u00a0Bucknell University<\/strong>\u00a0(67 points) tied at No. 8.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/strong>\u00a0(47 points) completes the Top 10 with\u00a0Iona College<\/strong>\u00a0(11 points) also receiving votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
