IN\u00a0the first collegiate dual meet of the season, the Alabama men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving teams each cruised to victory over Delta State University.\u00a0 The women swept the Statesmen by a score of 216-79, while the men picked up the victory, 199-98.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">\u201cThis meet allowed us to gauge where we are early in the season, get a look at our freshmen and just get a baseline for the season,\u201d UA head coach Dennis Pursley said. \u201cEven though this meet is a week earlier than last year, we\u2019re much farther along than we were when we traveled to Delta State to open the season last season.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">The Crimson Tide started the meet strong, picking up victories in the 400 medley relays.\u00a0 Senior All-Americans Kaylin Burchell and Kristel Vourna, along with junior Emma Saunders and sophomore Bailey Scott swam to victory on the women\u2019s side.\u00a0 For the men, NCAA champion 50 freestyle champion Kristian Gkolomeev, sophomores Pavel Romanov and Connor Oslin, and junior Brett Walsh combined for the win.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">On the women\u2019s side of the action, four women swept their respective events. Burchell swept the breaststroke events, Saunders swept the backstroke events, and sophomore Leah Bird swept the butterfly events.\u00a0 Vourna also had a win in her first individual race of the year, touching the wall first in the 50 freestyle. Sophomore Bonnie Macdonald won both the 1,000 and 500 freestyles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Sophomore Emily Zapinski started her second seasons with Tide strong, winning the 200 freestyle, respectively.\u00a0 Freshman Temarie Tomley, began her college career with a bang as she picked up a victory in the 100 freestyle while fellow rookie\u00a0Mia Nonnenberg won the 200 individual medley to give the Tide a sweep in the individual events.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Individually for the men, Romanov swept the breaststroke events.\u00a0 Junior Abbas Qali touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly for his first collegiate win, while sophomore Taylor Charles picked wins in the 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley. Junior Travis Kerner won the 1,000 freestyle while classmate Brian Westlake won the 500 freestyle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Gkolomeev won his lone individual event of the day as he swam to victory in the 50 freestyle.\u00a0 All-American Connor Oslin won the 100 backstroke. Freshman Will Freeman had a strong collegiate debut winning his first event, the 200 freestyle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">In the diving events, sophomores Dakota Toner and Brent Sagert swept their respective events in the competition.\u00a0 Toner posted scores of 254.48 off the platform and 241.28 off the one-meter board, while Sagert had a score of 318.68 off the platform and 281.03 off the one-meter board.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">The Tide closed the meet in the same fashion as they began it, winning each of the 400 freestyle relay races to round out the competition.\u00a0 For the men, Gkolomeev, Walsh, sophomore Alex Gray, and senior Clark Garner combined to finish in front. On the women\u2019s side of the meet, Saunders, Justine Panian, Bailey Scott and Tomley combined to finish first.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Alabama returns to action on\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1972432725\"><span class=\"aQJ\">October 10<\/span><\/span>\u00a0against the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Ga.<\/p>\n<p><em>The above article is a press release submitted to Swimming World. Both the Statesmen (199-98) and Lady Statesmen (216-79) were defeated against the team from the Southeastern Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Fabrice Wendel claimed victory in the 100-Freestyle (45.22) ahead of a pair of Alabama swimmers. Newcomer Andreas Meuser collected a fourth place finish in the race (47.18) in his first meet swimming for Delta State.<\/p>\n<p>Andreas Wiesner (50.12) and Yvan Nys (52.40) took second and third place in the 100-Backstroke, while Matteo Fraschi (56.67) and Max Pendall (57.08) took second and third place in the 100-Butterfly. Fraschi was edged at the finish by 0.06 seconds by Pavel Romanov.<\/p>\n<p>Vlad Zinca added a second place (49.88)in the 100-Butterfly and fourth place (1:54.30) in the 200-Butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>Wiesner added a victory later in the meet in the 200-Backstroke (1:50.16) while Nys (1:57.23) ended up sixth. Wiesner (1:51.95), Pendall (1:54.20), and Fraschi (1:54.54) brought home the 2-3-4 finishes in the 200-Individual Medley.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Swaine was the top finishing Statesmen diver with a fourth place finish in the 1M and Platform diving competitions.<\/p>\n<p>The Lady Statesmen claimed a pair of runner-up finishes as Anastasia Klyarovskaya (55.54) took second in the 100-Backstroke and Melanie Tombers (2:11.22) was second in the 200-Individual Medley. Tombers (10:26.70) added a fourth place finish in the 1,000-Freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe Bennett added a pair of top finished with a third place effort in the 100-Freestyle (54.05) and a fourth place (24.50) in the 50-Freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsten Stroven (2:32.06), Dani Meerholz (2:33.55), and Ami Tipper (2:41.62) took 3-4-5 honors in the 200-Breaststroke. Meerholz (1:57.74) added a third place finish in the 200-Freestyle. Stroven (2:19.73) and Tipper (2:28.28) added third and fourth place finishes in the 200-Individual Medley.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Hoop topped the Lady Statesmen diving efforts with a fourth place finish from both the 1M and Platform dives.<\/p>\n<p>Delta State returns to competition on October 11 at Western Kentucky University from Bowling Green, Ky. as part of the road schedule to open the season with the first home meet from the DSU Aquatics Center to be held December 13-16 in the form of the DSU Christmas Invitational.<\/p>\n<p><em>The above article is a press release submitted to Swimming World.
