GUARATINGUETA, Brazil, September 6. THIS evening, the short course Jose Finkel Trophy meet featured some top-flight sprinting in the 100 free and 50 breast events, as well as several other events on tap.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’ Femke Heemskerk touched out Larissa Oliveira in the women’s 100-meter free, 52.34 to 52.88. Heemskerk’s time is now the standing meet record, while Oliveira lowered the South American and Brazilian records in the process with her second-place effort. Daynara De Paula wound up third in 53.80.<\/p>\n

Cesar Cielo overcame a star-studded 100-meter free finale with a 46.08. That swim was just a bit off his South American record of 45.74 from 2010, and would have ranked him fourth in the world last year behind Florent Manaudou (45.04), James Magnussen (45.60) and Vlad Morozov (45.64).<\/p>\n

Henrique Martins took second in 47.33 with Joao De Lucca earning third in 47.56. Nicolas Oliveira wound up fourth in the deep finale with a 47.65, while Federico Grabich also cleared 48 with a fifth-place 47.69.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’ Moniek Nijhuis hit the wall in 30.12 for a new meet record in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke. That’s not too far off her fourth-ranked season best of 29.79 from a year ago. Ana Carvalho claimed silver in 31.02 with Carolina Bergamaschi rounding out the podium with a 31.14.<\/p>\n

Felipe Silva missed his South American record in the men’s 50-meter breast by the slimmest of margins with a meet-record time of 25.71. That came up short of his 25.70 from 2009, and would have placed him second in the world last year behind Roland Schoeman’s sizzling 25.65 from the Berlin World Cup. Joao Gomes Jr. took second in 26.54 with Felipe Lima placing third in 26.58. Paulo De Paula and Angelito Cassandra tied for fourth with matching 26.96s.<\/p>\n

Andrea Berrino lowered the meet record in the women’s 200-meter back with a 2:08.01, while Natalia De Luccas finished second in 2:09.18. Florencia Perotti closed out the top three in 2:11.77. Leonardo De Deus followed with a 1:53.36 to 1:53.68 touchout win against Fernando Dos Santos in the men’s 200-meter back. Fabio Santi snared third in 1:54.64.<\/p>\n

Minas’ Femke Heemskerk, Moniek Nijhuis, Dandara Antonio and Carolina Bergamaschi cruised to victory in the women’s 400-meter medley relay in 3:59.48. Pinheiros’ Guilherme Guido, Joao Gomes Jr. Guilherme Rosolen and Bruno Fratus topped the men’s 400-meter medley relay in 3:28.07.<\/p>\n
