BEHIND Kevin Swander’s victory in the 100 breaststroke and another stellar day on the diving board, Indiana extended its lead at the Big Ten Conference Men’s Championships on Friday night. The Hoosiers, who scored four athletes in the three-meter diving competition, have totaled 497.5 points. Minnesota sits in second with 407 points followed by Michigan (348) and Northwestern (299).

Swander was spectacular en route to his breast triumph as he posted the nation’s fastest time of the season, a 52.64 effort that fended off Northwestern’s Mike Alexandrov (52.97). Swander also contributed to the winning 200 medley relay as he joined Ben Hesen, Thomas Clavier and Todd Patrick for a championship-record time of 1:25.73. Northwestern followed in 1:25.91, also under Minnesota’s former record of 1:26.13.

Northwestern’s Kyle Bubolz lowered his championship record in the 100 butterfly to 46.40, which was fast enough to defeat Michigan’s Davis Tarwater (46.68). Northwestern also benefited from Matt Grevers’ triumph in the 100 backstroke. Grevers clocked 46.32 to outdistance the 46.62 of Hesen.

Michigan notched a one-two finish in the 200 freestyle behind the 1:34.34 and 1:35.49 times of Peter Vanderkaay and Chris DeJong. Meanwhile, the Wolverines’ Alex Vanderkaay (3:44.38) edged Minnesota’s Adam Mitchell (3:44.43) in the 400 individual medley. The Vanderkaay brothers teamed with freshmen Bobby Savulich and Matt Patton for gold in the 800 free relay (6:22.73). Peter Vanderkaay led off in 1:33.71.

Team Standings

Indiana 497.5
Minnesota 407
Michigan 348
Northwestern 299
Ohio State 250.5
Purdue 240
Wisconsin 169
Penn State 130
Iowa 97
Michigan State 76

Event 7 Men 200 Yard Medley Relay
================================================================================
Big Ten Meet: * 1:26.13  2003      Minnesota
Smolinski, Hackler, Lundin, Ong
Pool: # 1:26.23  2002      Minnesota
Smolinski, Hackler, Lundin, Ong
1:26.52  "A"
1:29.32  "B"
School                           Seed     Finals       Points
================================================================================
1 Indiana                       1:28.30    1:25.73*"A"
