King (1:08.03), Hannah Kukurugya (59.13) and Katie Drabot (54.76) not only won the women’s 400-meter medley relay in a meet-record time of 4:03.44, the team also took down the World Junior Record since each of its members were also eligible to set a FINA World Junior Record.

USA’s winning time of 4:03.44 downed the meet record of 4:03.73 set by Team USA in 2010, and also lowered Russia’s World Junior Record of 4:04.48 from last summer’s World Junior Championships. Yes, the realm of WJRs are currently confusing since FINA will only recognize some swims that went through all of the same verification as FINA World Records have to undergo, including drug testing. So, even though the U.S. had a faster Junior Pan Pac time in 2010 than Russia’s now former World Junior Record, it was never recognized as such.

Russia’s Splits:

Daria K.
