THE University of Notre Dame swept the male and female titles at the Big East Conference Championships on Saturday night. The Irish women finished with 705.5 points to defeat Rutgers (687.5). The University of Pittsburgh was third with 447 points. On the male side, Notre Dame cruised to the championship with 809 points. Pittsburgh was second with 584.5 points.<\/p>\n<p>Notre Dame got a major boost toward the championship when Julia Quinn and Jessica Stephens placed first and second, respectively, in the 200 breaststroke. Quinn covered the eight-lap race in 2:14.27 while Stephens checked in with a mark of 2:16.79. Meanwhile, Katie Carroll was second for the Irish in the 200 butterfly as she finished behind Cincinnati\u2019s Ann Degenstein, who set a championship record with a time of 1:58.28.<\/p>\n<p>In placing second, Rutgers enjoyed a strong showing on the final day of action at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. In addition to Kelly Harrigan setting a championship record in the 200 backstroke (1:54.76), the Scarlet Knights were fueled by victories by Madison Kennedy in the 100 freestyle (49.33) and by the 400 freestyle relay (3:20.48). Villanova\u2019s Jenny Somerville prevailed in the 1,650 free (16:29.92).<\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, Jay Vanden Berg and superior depth lifted the Irish to the conference title. Vanden Berg took first place in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 15:15.99 and Notre Dame had three swimmers in the top four in the distance discipline. Meanwhile, West Virginia was bolstered by victories from Chris Hagedorn in the 100 free (44.48) and Pablo Marmolejo in the 200 butterfly (1:45.56).<\/p>\n<p>West Virginia also defeated the competition in the 400 freestyle relay with a performance of 2:57.39. Other individual triumphs were secured by Louisville\u2019s Vali Preda in the 200 breaststroke and Pittsburgh\u2019s Jeff Leath in the 200 backstroke (1:46.68).
