THE Florida State women won three events on Saturday to clinch the Atlantic Coast Conference championship over Virginia. Competing at the University of Maryland, the Seminoles tallied 596.5 points to finish ahead of the Cavaliers (562). North Carolina checked in with a third-place score of 517.

Virginia’s Rachael Burke jumpstarted the night with a first-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle. Burke covered the distance in 16:13.65, ahead of the 16:17.21 mark of Clemson’s Kim Routh. Brielle White handed the Cavaliers another win when she bested the field in the 200 backstroke. Adding to her earlier triumph in the 100 back, White won the longer dorsal in 1:55.83, a conference record, and led three Virginia swimmers in the championship heat. Florida State’s Romy Altmann was second in 1:57.16.

Dominating in the sprints throughout the meet, Florida State was carried by Carrie Ellis in the 100 freestyle. The senior was the only swimmer under the 50-second mark and won the race in 49.46, more than a second clear of Virginia Tech’s Sara Smith (50.67).
