IT appears that a relay disqualification by Penn State on the first night of action has not hindered its chances at claiming the Big Ten Conference championship. Racing at Ohio State University on Friday night, the Nittany Lions used strength and depth to take the lead in the team standings. Penn State has accumulated 372 points, ahead of the 370 of Michigan and the 339 of Minnesota.

Penn State started to make its move in the 400 individual medley, where it placed three swimmers in the championship final. Freshman Kaitlin O’Brien won the event for the Nittany Lions in 4:12.03 while classmate Kelly Nelson was third in 4:15.31. They sandwiched Minnesota’s Jenny Shaughnessy (4:15.13). Megan Palera was sixth for Penn State.

Another boost for the Nittany Lions arrived in the 100 backstroke as Sarah Haupt and Erin Morris notched a one-three showing. Haupt won in 54.04, slower than her 53.55 from prelims but enough to hold off Indiana’s Leila Vaziri (54.43). Morris was timed in 55.12.

Michigan captured first place in the night’s opening event, the 400 medley relay, as the quartet of Kaitlyn Brady, Justine Mueller, Payton Johnson and Lindsey Smith checked in at 3:38.45, a little more than half a second swifter than the 3:39.05 of Wisconsin. Brady also prevailed in the 100 butterfly, setting a championship record of 52.60. That swim gave Brady a lopsided triumph over Purdue’s Carlene Takaki (54.29) and Haupt (54.34). Also adding to her relay triumph was Smith. The junior negotiated the 200 freestyle in 1:47.05, good for an A-Qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships. Northwestern’s Andrea Hupman followed Smith in 1:47.30.

Wisconsin’s Amalia Sarnecki bested the competition in the 100 breaststroke with a winning performance of 1:02.63. That effort left Sarnecki in front of Northwestern’s Hayley Fry (1:02.83) and Penn State’s Abby Hoisington (1:03.10).

Team Standings

1.
