NOTRE DAME ended the third day of the Big East Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center with leads on the male and female sides, although the Irish margin for the women was only five points over Rutgers. As for the men, Notre Dame has rolled up 511 points, well ahead of the 383.5 of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side, Rutgers\u2019 Kelly Harrigan broke her own championship record in the 100 backstroke with a swim of 53.87, more than a second clear of teammate Madison Kennedy (55.24). Meanwhile, Katie Carroll carried Notre Dame with a win in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:14.37. That effort supplied a win of nearly eight seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Other triumphs in the female competition were secured by Pittsburgh\u2019s Kristin Brown in the 200 freestyle (1:47.88), Louisville\u2019s Heather Meng in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.78) and Cincinnati\u2019s Ann Degenstein in the 100 butterfly (53.63). Rutgers won the 400 medley relay in a meet-record mark of 3:40.60.<\/p>\n<p>In moving out to its commanding lead in the men\u2019s event, Notre Dame received a gold-medal effort from Jamie Lutkus in the 400 I.M. The senior touched the wall in 3:52.07. For Pittsburgh, wins were secured by Darryl Washington in the 200 free (1:38.34) and Thomas Bird in the 100 backstroke (49.77). Louisville\u2019s Vali Preda won the 100 breast (53.66) and West Virginia\u2019s Andrew Langenfield set a championship record in the 100 fly with a time of 47.82.
