February 16. The Auburn men's team and Georgia's women both hold leads after two days of the 2006 Southeastern Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, being contested at the University of Tennessee Student Aquatic Center.

The Tigers of Auburn concluded day two of the nation's premier league championship with 421 points, standing 70 points ahead of the Florida Gators.

Auburn's Cesar Cielo, Scott Goodrich and George Bovell grabbed the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle, totaling 69 points, while Alexei Puninski teamed with the trio to win the 200-yard freestyle relay with a pool-record time of 1:18.17. They also snagged second, fourth and sixth in the 200-yard individual medley and second in the one-meter diving to give the Tigers a commanding lead.

"We thought it would be a real close meet," Auburn head coach David Marsh said, "and it is a real close meet. I was very pleased to make a move after this morning. This was a strong day for us, so we should have scored a lot of points. We did, and I am very pleased with that. We will have to keep improving from here."

On the women's side, Georgia has a 38-point advantage over second-place Auburn, with the Lady Bulldogs tallying 376 points on the evening.

Georgia won all four swimming events, with Laura Conway, Mary DeScenza and Kara Lynn Joyce all setting new pool records in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 50-yard freestyle, respectively. Joyce's time of 21.70 in the 50-yard freestyle topped her 2005 SEC Championship record mark of 21.91. Georgia's tandem of Joyce, Tricia Harm, Karen Guilkey and Jessica Cole were victorious in the 200-yard freestyle relay, setting another pool record.

"This was one of the best nights we've ever had at the SECs," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "It's unbelievable. I remember the days when we hoped to get one, and tonight we got three individuals and a relay.

"To be able to sweep the women's swimming events is no small feat in this conference. We have so many great teams and so many great individuals."

One SEC record fell on the men's side, one that threatened a world record. Georgia sophomore Sebastian Rouault knocked 2.1 seconds off the 500-yard freestyle mark he set last year with his 4:12.90 clocking tonight, which is the second-fastest in history. Florida's Ryan Lochte won the other men's event, the 200-yard individual medley (1:43.31).

The diving springboard events both were sweeps. After Georgia's Chris Colwill won the men's three-meter and South Carolina's Allison Brennan took the one-meter, they both came back with wins on Thursday. Colwill compiled a 441.05 score in the one-meter for his win, while Brennan tallied 361.35 in the three-meter for the victory.

The third day of competition begins Friday morning at 10 a.m. with the 400-yard individual medley preliminaries.

Team Points are as follows:

Women – Team Rankings – Through Event 16

1.
