THE University of Wisconsin got off to a strong start Wednesday night as the Big Ten Conference Women’s Championships started at Ohio State University. The Badgers cooked up a win in the 200 medley relay and placed third in the 800 free relay en route to 72 points and the lead in the team standings.

The Badgers opened the competition with a dominating victory in the medley relay as the quartet of Susan Johnson, Amalia Sarnecki, Sarah Hernandez and Jackie Vavrek was timed in 1:38.89, well ahead of the 1:40.70 effort Michigan posted for second place. Johnson got the Badgers off to a solid start, but it was Sarnecki who gave Wisconsin a commanding advantage, thanks to her 27.52 split on the breaststroke leg.

Indiana collected third place in the medley relay and Minnesota was fourth. Penn State was in third place after the third leg, but the Nittany Lions were disqualified for an early start heading into the freestyle anchor.

In the 800 freestyle relay, Minnesota grabbed top honors when the foursome of Jenny Shaughnessy, Yuen Kobayashi, Kate Hardt and Christine Jennings touched the wall in 7:09.15. That time was more than two seconds quicker than the 7:11.59 of Penn State, which received a 1:47.30 leadoff leg from freshman Kelly Nelson. Wisconsin finished third in 7:13.02.

While Wisconsin sat in first with 72 points, Minnesota was second with 70 points, followed by Michigan with 64 points and Indiana with 56 points.

Team Standings at end of Day One
1) Wisconsin 72
2) Minnesota 70
3) Michigan 64
4) Indiana 56
5) Purdue 54
6) Ohio State 50
7) Illinois 46
8) Iowa 40
9) Northwestern 36
10) Penn State 34
11) Michigan State 12

Event 1 Women 200 Yard Medley Relay
================================================================================
Meet Record: # 1:39.41 2003 Penn State
Haupt, Stanchock, Biedermann, Hostetler
Pool Record: @ 1:42.92 1/28/2006 Penn State University
S.
