Triple breaststroke world record-holder Penny Heyns of South Africa was an easy winner in the women’s 100m breaststroke and American Chad Carvin repeated his triumph in the 400m free on the first day of competition of World Cup II, held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. <\/p>\n
Canada took the four-lap event in 1:07.78, well off her world record of 1:05.57, but more than a second ahead of Australia’s Brooke Hanson and China’s Qi Hui. Carvin who set an American and US Open record in the 400m free several days earlier at the World Cup meet at the University of Maryland, won again, clocking 3:46.00, to defeat Hungary’s Bela Szabados and Canada’s Mark Johnston. <\/p>\n
Canadian Curtis Myden, the world’s fastest 400m medley swimmer in 1999, outlasted America’s Robert Margalis, a high school senior, and veteran Tom Wilkens to win his specialty in 4:15.98 Wilken’s took the 200m breast in 2:12.94. <\/p>\n
Canadian swimmers won five of the men’s events and two of the women’s. Mike Mitenko took the 50 fly in 24.33, Mark Versfeld won the 100 back in 53.74, Ryan Laurin edged teammate Mark Johnston in the 100 free with his 49.34, while Shamek Pietucha’s 1:58.10 led a Canadian sweep of the 200 fly. <\/p>\n
Kelly Stefanyshyn dominated the women’s 200m backstroke, her 2:08.06 more than four seconds in front of Spain’s Nina Zhivanevskaya in second, while Karine Chevrier led another Canadian sweep in winning the 100m fly in one minute flat. <\/p>\n
Zhivanevskaya, a former Russian national champion, took the 50 back in 28.31. <\/p>\n
Romania’s Beatrice Caslaru continued her ownership of the 200 IM, winning handily in 2:11.84, well in front of world record-holder Chen Yan of China and Commonwealth record-holder Marianne Limpert. Britain’s Alison Sheppard won the 50 free (25.69), Sweden’s Josefin Lillhage took the 200 free (1:58.73) and Holland’s Carla Guerts emerged the winner in the 800 free (8:37.36). <\/p>\n
