BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil, February 8. The eighth and final stop on the 2005-06 FINA World Cup circuit will run from Friday through Sunday in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The seventh leg of the series was completed last week in East Meadow, New York, located on Long Island. Prior to that stop, there were legs in Durban (South Africa), Sydney (Australia), Daejon (South Korea), Stockholm (Sweden), Berlin (Germany) and Moscow (Russia).<\/p>\n

The World Cup series has been phenomenal to this point, with last week producing several high-quality swims, including a chase of the 800-meter freestyle world record by American Kate Ziegler. Heading into the final leg, South Africa\u2019s Ryk Neethling leads the scoring race on the male side, as his 51.81 effort in the 100 individual medley from Sydney was worth 1,089 points. He is followed by the Ukraine\u2019s Oleg Lisogor (1,063) and the United States\u2019 Peter Marshall (1,044).<\/p>\n

For the women, Sweden\u2019s Therese Alshammar used a strong showing in New York to grab first-place in the points standings. Alshammar clocked 25.78 in the 50-meter butterfly, an effort that was worth 1,026 points. Countrywoman Anna-Karin Kammerling sits second with 1,018 points and the Netherlands\u2019 Marleen Veldhuis is third with 1,015 points.<\/p>\n
