POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. January, 29. THE UMBC women’s swimming and diving team (9-1) concluded its dual meet season with a 138.5-104.5 victory at Marist
\nSaturday afternoon, handing the Red Foxes (9-1) their first loss of the
\nseason. The Retriever men (6-4) had their winning streak snapped at five,
\nas they were edged by Marist (8-1), 125-118, in a meet that came down to
\nthe final relay.<\/p>\n

Both meets were closely contested throughout, but UMBC’s women pulled away
\nby winning six of the last seven events, while the Retriever men lost in
\nthe final relay for the third time this season.<\/p>\n

Freshman Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md.\/Wilde Lake) was the only
\nmultiple winner for the women, as she took both the 200-free (1:57.66) and
\nthe 500-free (5:11.16).<\/p>\n

Other winners for the Retrievers included senior Amber Harris (Rochester,
\nN.Y.\/Greece Arcadia) in the 1,000-free (10:43.07), sophomore Meghan
\nSackett (Cockeysville, Md.\/Dulaney\/Maryland) in the 200-fly (2:09.58),
\nfreshman Robin Klein (McMinnville, Ore.\/McMinnville) in the 100-free
\n(54.44), junior Agnes Stanislawska (Zielona Gora, Poland\/LO VI Zielona
\nGora) in the 200-back (2:07.68) and freshman Tina Cantwell (Sinking
\nSpring, Pa.\/The Hill School) in the 200-breast (2:21.57).<\/p>\n

UMBC also won the 400-free relay, as sophomore Lindsey Engler (Salisbury,
\nMd.\/James M. Bennett), Harris, freshman Joy Wilde (Greenlawn,
\nN.Y.\/Harborfields) and senior Elyse Gibson (Nova Scotia, Canada\/Queen
\nElizabeth) teamed to swim a time of 3:40.90.<\/p>\n

The men were paced by junior Ryan Karrer (Linwood, N.J.\/Mainland
\nRegional), who swept the distance freestyle events with times of 4:43.50
\nin the 500-free and 9:36.31 in the 1,000-free.<\/p>\n

Other winners for the Retrievers included freshman Justin Bronson (Oshawa,
\nOntario\/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) in the 200-free (1:44.41), junior diver Jeff
\nSalgado (Glen Rock, Pa.\/South Western\/St. Bonaventure) in the 1-meter
\ncompetition (256.50) and senior Geza Szabo (Szolnok, Hungary\/Ady Endre
\nGimnazium) in the 200-fly (1:51.46).<\/p>\n

In addition, UMBC won the 400-medley relay, as freshman Milos Djukic (Novi
\nSad, Serbia & Montenegro\/Svetozar Markovic), sophomore Scott Auchter
\n(Wernersville, Pa.\/Wilson), Szabo and senior Adam Blais (Westbrook,
\nMaine\/Westbrook) teamed to swim a time of 3:32.56.<\/p>\n

The Retrievers now have two-and-a-half weeks off before heading to Boston
\nfor the America East Championships.<\/p>\n
