January, 29. THE Spider Swimming and Diving team garnered its first win of the season by topping William & Mary, 157.5-136.5, Saturday in the Robins Center Natatorium. The Spiders picked up 10 event wins including sophomore Jessica Witt in the 200 free, 200 back and 100 fly. Freshman Lauren Beaudreau won both the 100 and 200 breast. Freshman C.J. Pisano took home the top spot in the 50 free. Junior Caitlin Geary won the 1,650 free, senior Anne Kirchner finished first in the 200 fly and junior Maggie Maranda won the 3 meter diving event. The Spiders’ 200 medley relay rounded out the wins on the day.

“I am very happy with the result,” head coach Matt Barany said. “Being at home is something we aren’t accustomed to so it brought on a whole new aspect to the meet.”

Maranda opened the event with a season-best score of 218.92 to win 3 meter diving competition. Sophomore Erin Barry placed second in the competition with a season-best total of 203.70. Barry got back on the board later in the day and took home second-place honors in the 1 meter with a season-best score of 216.00.

Richmond’s 200 medley relay opened the day’s swimming events with a 1:48.51 for first-place points. The team, made up of Beaudreau, sophomore Anastasia Lau, Pisano and freshman Brie McDowell, finished just a tenth of a second off its previous best and four-tenths off the Spiders’ season-best time.

Geary was next up in the 1,650 free event, finishing in 17:18.13 to earn the Spiders nine points. Senior Megan Benner came in third with an 18:11.45 for three more Richmond points.

Witt then garnered her first win of the meet, going 1:54.24 in the 200 free. She later picked up a win in the 200 back with a time of 2:04.88. The Fullerton, Calif., native capped off the afternoon with a 59.30 in the 100 fly. The swim was her first of the season in the 100 fly.

“Jessica (Witt) continued to show her diversity by winning the 100 fly as well as two other events,” Barany said. “A lot of swimmers came through for us today. Anne’s (Kirchner) win was big for her and I thought Swift and Riley’s performance in the 400 IM was an improvement as well.”

Beaudreau later picked up two wins in the breast events, going 1:06.07 in the 100-yard distance and 2:19.02 in the 200-yard distance. Her 200 breast time marked a season-best and upped her all-time second-place Richmond record.

Kirchner won her first event of the season with a 2:07.20 in the 200 fly. Her previous best finish was at Duke where she finished third with a 2:09.04. Pisano’s win in the 50 free also was her first of the season, with a time of 24.79.

“It is easy to get motivated on the road,” Barany said. “We have to learn to be sharp and aggressive at home. I am happy with the result, now we have to improve for next weekend and the Atlantic 10 Championships in the future.”

Richmond remains at home next weekend when it hosts Navy, Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Robins Center Natatorium. The Spiders will honor seniors Benner and Kirchner, who will be swimming for the final time at home, prior to the duel which begins at 2 p.m. Admission to the event is free.

Licensed to University of Richmond Hy-Tek's Meet Manager
Richmond v.
