PULLMAN, Wash. January 28. WASHINGTON State earned its first victory over the Oregon State since 2002 as the Cougars narrowly defeated the Beavers 134.5-127.5 in a dual that went down to the wire Friday at Gibb Pool. Washington State dominated the breaststroke events with Copland and Povilonyte trading top-two finishes in the two races. Povilonyte earned the win in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.83) and finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.05) while Copland claimed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke (2:20.01) and placed second in the 200 breaststroke (1:05.90). Copland also added a third place finish in the 400 individual medley (4:31.85) earning a total of 16 points for WSU. With the Cougars trailing 110.5-115.5 with two event left, WSU junior Kayli Changstrom gutted out a win in the 400 individual medley earning a Gibb Pool record with a time of 4:28.74. Jane Copland and Laurie Gregg finished third and fifth respectively in the event earning crucial points as the Cougars pulled ahead 123.5-121.5.<\/p>\n

The Beavers were led by Saori Haruguchi who picked up wins in the 200 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke. Haruguchi led all scorers with 27 points. Other Oregon State individual winners include Ausra Pacebutaite, Erika Wirth, Christina Kinney, and Sandy Hong.<\/p>\n
