TUCSON, Ariz. January, 27. THE No. 5 Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving team completed the first day of competition against Texas Friday, taking an early lead for both sides. The Wildcat women are leading No. 10 Texas 113-71 while the men are downing the No. 7 Longhorns 115-71.<\/p>\n
The women won eight of 10 events beginning with the 200 free relay. The Arizona team composed of sophomore Courtney Cashion, senior Jenna Gresdal,
\nsenior Marshi Smith and sophomore Lacey Nymeyer finished first (1:33.20) and the other Arizona team of freshmen Anna Turner, Taylor Baughman, Lindsey Kelly and senior Ryann Hackett finished second in a time of 1:33.76.<\/p>\n
Junior Whiney Myers won the 400 IM with a time of 4:20.62, while in the 100 freestyle; the Wildcats took the top-three positions. Nymeyer won the race with a time of 50.73 as Cashion and Baughman came in second (51.09) and third (51.48).<\/p>\n
Smith finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:03.05) and Gresdal finished
\nthird (2:03.62). In the 200 breaststroke, senior Erin Sieper finished first (2:15.65) while senior Lisa Pursley finished second in the 100 butterfly (55.68).<\/p>\n
In the 500 freestyle Nymeyer finished first with a time of 4:56.30 and Myers finished second (4:56.43). For the final event of the evening, the 400 medley relay team of Gresdal, Sieper, Myers and Nymeyer finished first with a time of 3:44.85.<\/p>\n
In the diving well for the women, senior Tiffany Manning took first place in both springboard events. She tallied 284.03 points in the 3-meter and 284.32 points in the 1-meter. Also in the 3-meter competition, junior Megan MacDonald finished fourth with 252.98 points.<\/p>\n
On the men's side, the Wildcats placed first in seven of 10 events. The 200 free relay team of seniors Simon Burnett, Lyndon Ferns, sophomore Albert Subirats and junior Adam Ritter started things off by winning the race with a time of 1:20.43.<\/p>\n
Ritter later finished second in the 400 IM (3:56.25), while senior Dave Rollins finished third (4:00.08). Ferns and Burnett took the top-two positions of the 100 freestyle, as Ferns won the race with a time of 43.95 and Burnett finished second (44.01).<\/p>\n
Sophomore Nick Thoman finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of
\n1:45.36 and in the 200 breaststroke, Rollins placed second (2:02.00).
\nFerns took his second individual victory in the 100 butterfly (47.89) and
\nSubirats came in second-place with a time of 48.80. Sophomore Matt Biel
\nfinished second as well in the 500 freestyle (4:29.54).<\/p>\n
The 400 medley relay team of Thoman, Rollins, Subirats and Ferns completed
\ntoday's events, finishing first with a time of 3:17.20.<\/p>\n
Senior John Collier led the divers, as he won both springboard events. He
\nposted 284.47 points in the 1-meter competition and 351.03 points in the
\n3-meter. Junior Patrick Sullivan finished second on both boards, respectively, as he tallied 271.58 points in the 1-meter and 270.30 points in the 3-meter.<\/p>\n
