BLOOMINGTON, Ind. January, 25. THE No. 10 Indiana men\u2019s swimming and diving team swept the Big Ten weekly awards for the week ending Jan. 22. Not only did sophomore Ben Hesen share the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week title with Northwestern\u2019s Eric Nilsson, senior Ryan Fagan\u2019s record-setting performance garnered Big Ten Diver of the Week honors, as announced by the conference office on Jan. 24.<\/p>\n
Hesen, a Jefferson, Ind., product, won every event he competed in and posted one NCAA B-cut time as he helped the Hoosiers defeat No. 17 Kentucky, 160-137, last weekend. Against the Wildcats, the sophomore won the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events in 50.03 and 1:49.26, respectively. He went on to claim the 100 butterfly event in 49.93 before swimming on the winning 200-yard medley relay that earned a provisional time of 1:29.19. This is the first weekly accolade of Hesen's career.<\/p>\n
\u201cBen had a great meet against UK,\u201d Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. \u201cHis split in the 50 back, and time from the 200 back were both season bests. He is right where he needs to be leading into Big Tens.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fagan, a Pittsburgh, Pa., native, claimed Diver of the Week honors for the second time this season after diving his way into the IU record books. Against Kentucky, he broke a 16-year-old mark set by Olympic gold medalist Mark Lenzi. Fagan scored an amazing 399.30 on the three-meter board to top the previous standard of 397.65 set during the 1990 season. The senior also dominated the one-meter competition to win the title with a score of 321.22. He has now been named Diver of the Week three times in his career.<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously, with Fagan breaking a 16-year-old record by Mark Lenzi, it is nice for him to get recognized for that,\u201d Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. \u201cHe has certainly earned it and is a hard worker that does everything I ask.\u201d<\/p>\n
Next up, the Hoosiers play host to Michigan in a rescheduled meet on Jan. 29 at noon. The contest will take place at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington, Ind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
