BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Febrary, 1. THE No. 15 Indiana women's swimming and diving team garnered both the Big Ten weekly awards for the week ending Jan. 29. Junior Annica Lofstedt snared Big Ten Swimmer of the Week kudos, while sophomore Christina Loukas earned Big Ten Diver of the Week for the second consecutive time, as announced by the conference office on Jan. 31.<\/p>\n
Lofstedt led the Hoosiers with four event titles, including four NCAA provisional times, in a double-dual competition against No. 14 Penn State (L, 197.5-142.5) and Ohio State (W, 199-151). Her individual victories came in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events as she touched the wall first in B-cut times of 23.48 and 50.87, respectively. The Orebro, Sweden, native also swam on the 400-yard freestyle relay that placed first in 3:24.70, and the second-place 400 medley relay that posted a 3:44.77. Both squads claimed provisional standards. Lofstedt also swam on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.19) and the second-place 200-yard medley relay (1:43.86). She has now been named Swimmer of the Week twice in her career as she was last honored on Nov. 1, 2005.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year, Annica has really learned how to win,\u201d Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. \u201cThe ability to get one\u2019s hand on the wall first under all conditions tells us she has developed into and elite-level swimmer. This award is richly deserved\u201d<\/p>\n
On the diving side of the meet, IU diving dominated with a top-five sweep in the one-meter and a top-two sweep in the three-meter. Loukas swept the event titles in amazing fashion during the dual. In the one-meter competition, Loukas won with a 322.20 tally, which surpassed the previous pool record of 317.70 set by Purdue\u2019s Carrie McCambridge on Dec. 2, 2005.. In the three-meter event, the defending Big Ten Diver of the Week posted the highest score with a 332.92. This is the third weekly honor of her career and marks the second time this season she has been honored with teammate Annica Lofstedt.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think Christina winning this award not only reflects on her personal improvement, but also the improvement of the entire team,\u201d Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. \u201cEach one of our divers is completely focused on the upcoming championship season.\u201d<\/p>\n
